Lecky 1 Posted December 5, 2012 Hi all, I am a new resident of jersey and was wondering if I am allowed to travel with my guns to my fathers cabin in the catskills? He has a target range on his property, that we been using fo the last 20 yrs. Thanks

Old Glock guy 1,127 Posted December 5, 2012 Don't take any handguns. Thread over. Oh, and watch the mag capacity on your rifles. I believe you're limited to ten rounds in NY.

Lecky 1 Posted December 5, 2012 Rifles are ok? Why not handguns?
JamesC 2 Posted December 5, 2012 Rifles are ok? Why not handguns? To possess a handgun in NY, you must have a permit issued by the county court system.

Fishpaw 17 Posted December 5, 2012 To bring a handgun to NY, it must be for a sanctioned pistol match and you must be a member of the club or organization where the official shoot is being held....or something like that....Short answer is NO for handguns...and 10 round limit for long guns....unless you have a preban mag....... Clintoon Eastwood 2 Posted December 5, 2012 10 round mags for rifles. I don't know if you hunt but let me share this with you. I grew up upstate NY and I went back on thanksgiving to go deer hunting(with my NY sheriff buddy). I brought my AR's but I purposely had to buy a couple 10 rounds mags to bring upstate. No I didn't hunt with the Ar this time because of the county hunting laws. And as for pistols, I'm not exactly sure about the loop hole of hunting and having a pistol as a side arm with a valid hunting permit for NY. (Let me get back to you on that) I didn't bring one since I wasn't sure. But I was told by a (little bird) that you could co-own a pistol meaning both of you can legally own the same pistol from NJ and NY.(let me get back to you on this also) (Disclaimer, don't believe everything on the Internet and seek legal advice)

There is no loophole. Unless you are a resident, which allows you to apply for a pistol permit in the city/county you reside, where the city/county judge approves it, where you state on the form that you want to use it to purchase & possess and/or target shoot/hunt (Sportsman,) etc. The Sportsman permit authorizes carrying while hunting only. It's spelled out in N.Y. Pen. Law Section 400: http://codes.lp.find...UR/W/400/400.
