1st handgun and you know your gonna compete, i say go 9mm, nothing short barrel, full size and I'm not a fan of double action guns for comp cause you have to start double action. Look into striker fired guns as well as the 1911, I love shooting 1911's but also love my XDM's same trigger pull every time... problem now is ammo availability, even if you reload components are hard to get and the price of magazines have shot up so much.. really sucks.. but yeah whatever ur thinking of getting. go full size. I made the mistake of my first gun being a compact.

Ok a grand or less I would look at STI, CZ, or a CZ clone if your thinking about maybe shooting, shooting sports like steel or USPSA. Just be forewarned, shoot 1 match and you will only be thinking about when you can get to your next match. Matches are like potato chips, you can't shoot just 1 or 1 type. ;)
