As soon as I can get it transferred from my parents out of state I'll be receiveing my first gun, my grandfather's 1951 Ruger Mark I. From everything I've read, they are very picky eaters as far as ammo and CCI Minimags are the go to. Since those seem to have vaporized in the past couple months, does anyone have any suggestions of an alternative?

I have a mark II 22/45 and it eats bulk pack federal ammo with no issues at all. Before the mad rush for ammo I was getting 2100rds with a plastic case from cabelas for $80 I believe...maybe $90 shipped if I remember correctly.

I wouldn't just assume that it's a picky eater - likewise I'm not sure I'd go out and buy a thousand rounds of one brand or type. Find out what it likes, from both a functional and accuracy standpoint, before you stock-up on one particular type of ammo.

If that is from 1951 (a very good year BTW), it may be a "Red Eagle" Ruger. Very desireable.

The 1951 date is based in the serial number 28xxx which Ruger's table places in 1951 but I haven't called Ruger to confirm. Unfortunately it's not a "Red Eagle" but it's a moot point anyway as I plan to keep it in the family.
