North Carolina purchase laws, anyone familar?

Just curious if anyone knows what the requirments are for purchasing firearms in NC? My best friend lives down there and is wanting to get into the hobby. He has a few things that were passed down from his late grandfather and there is a shotgun I'd like to purchase from him. Can I do a face to face with him and have both of us fill out a COE and take possesion of it while if I make the trip to see him sometime (and drive it back with me)?

Obviously I wouldn't go near a pistol down there, but he wants me to go with him to help him pick out a nice home defense pistol. Does NC require FID cards or permits or waiting periods? Can he purchase a handgun from a coworker without any registration or nics?

Just some questions I thought I'd bounce off you guys, questions that came up in our conversation that I couldn't answer. Maybe someone here is familar with the laws down there?
