1911 build list

Recommended Posts

OK, so I'm going to start buying up parts for a 1911 build. This is going to happen slowly over time, so I'll have more than enough time to buy up everything I need. Heres my part list right now:

Doublestar 1911 frame

STI .45 ACP GI Slide

WC slide release

Mag release

Ed Brown mainspring housing

1911 auto rebuild kit (has all the springs and pins in one package)

match extractor

extended ejector (is there a functional difference between extended and regular?)

firing pin stop

firing pin

storm lake barrel/bushing

two piece guide rod

recoil spring/recoil spring plug

beaver tail/thumb safety

ultra light hammer/trigger

sear/sear spring/hammer strut

disconnector

plunger tube

trijicon tritium sight set (narrow tenon)

Parts I'm missing? Tools that are needed (besides patience)?

I know it'd be cheaper to buy and upgrade as needed, but this is a build I've wanted for a while now.

Not my business, but what is the ultimate purpose of your build?

An expensive journey of self discovery...kinda like niche celebrity religions!

But really, only to say I built that piece by piece with my blood sweat and tears. I want something that is mine and mine alone. And my weekends off are usually spent doing nothing of value, so I might as well start a super expensive time consuming hobby...

You will also need files. Several. And I would recommend a frame holding fixture so you don't crush your frame in the vice.

Oh, I know you've already alluded to it, but a bucket load of patience should be gotten in short order.

I'm on the journey myself. I'm still collecting parts. Check 1911forum.com for the gunsmithing and for sale sub-forums. Lots of good stuff.

If you have spare time on the weekends and you have money to burn you should start shooting competitions. There is one almost every Sunday and its always a good time getting out and making fun of each other. Steel marches, USPSA, Idpa, knock down on Saturday's at Old Bridge once a month.

This might help.

Thats the complete parts list. The kits are just pins and springs. Easier to group them together like that than to buy piece by piece. Also working on the patience. My current career path is force feeding me patience dealing with the general public.

This is something I want to get into. Just need the proper gear first.

Also got the free brownells 1911 catalog. Waiting for the next check to get the 1911 bible.

For anyone interested, PSA has released their "pre-production" 1911 frames and slides. The forums are raving about the near perfect fit. I just got my slide in and mocked it on to the frame. This baby is SWEET, might need a little lapping at most but it slides like butter on a hot pan. I'll try to get some measurements tomorrow. I've gone ahead and ordered a carbon frame to match the SS one as well.

    • What's the crime for riding a dirt bike on the street? Most likely a fine, misdemeanor at most. That justifies causing severe bodily injury through use of lethal force by auto?  There is no way to predict that he would have hit anyone, it's more like a 99.9% he wouldn't have hit anyone.  And that was a 2 lane road, not a pedestrian walkway. Hopefully he hires a good lawyer and everyone is held accountable for their actions.
    • Seriously? “Sounds Fishy”? You can’t think of a reason why the cop thought that was going to happen after watching the video? The cops are there after multiple reports/complaints of vehicles in the pedestrian walkway and reports of near misses. The ATV is on a pedestrian walkway where there are not supposed to be any vehicles and is moving at very fast pace. If he couldn’t stop for the police car, what makes you think he could stop in time for a pedestrian. He dynamited the breaks to avoid hitting the car and lost complete control of the ATV. Luckily the mass of the car prevented it from continuing to tumble down the walkway and take out pedestrians like bowling pins. If he had hit the brakes like that to avoid hitting a pedestrian instead of the car, would the ATV not have flipped? What would the now out of control ATV have done to any people in the walkway? Would the first person be hit have enough mass to stop the ATV in its proverbial tracks? I have seen plenty of pedestrians stuck. It is never like the movies. They don’t parkour out of the way of a speeding car - especially when pushing a baby carriage and the vehicle is approaching from the rear in a place where you think you are safe because vehicles are it permitted.

    • Why would he think the ATV rider was going to run over the pedestrians? Were the pedestrians laying in the road? Sounds fishy. A good lawyer will have a field day with this one.
    • If I lived in the hills, (or the burbs with a tall tree) I'd invest in at least one dedicated repeater and a solar based system to power it.  I don't think you need a tremendous amount of battery capacity, as the repeater will be on standby most of the time.  It will only draw serious current when it transmits. I think one could set up a reliable, self sustaining private node for around $1,500, maybe less.   Agree 100%
