It was a good day with a terrific bunch. This was an extremely worthwhile class, all the fundamentals I can easily take into practice at the range. The one piece of advice/kit Chris recommended that I didn't bother with: Sun Screen. Ouch my face.

So far a great knife for general use at work. I don't know that I would take it into the woods, but for casual edc and worst case street survival purposes it seems sturdy, easy to open one handed, and wicked sharp.

When I applied for my last three permits I asked the interviewing Detective if hollow points were illegal in NJ. He said they were and if anyone sold them to me 'mistakenly' I should 'do the right thing.' I didn't feel like contradicting him there, but I did go home and review the statue again. Otherwise the guy seems like a cool police officer.

Had a chance to shoot the FNX-9 today in PA and came home knowing what my next permit would be for, but searching only turns up 16/ 17 round models.

I have a 452 Special and it is a lovely rifle. I'm not sure where you are from, but I've seen them at Effingers in Bound Brook, NJ and Tanners in Jameson, PA.

I also have the Sig SCM 556. Things I like: Once I started using pmags I have not experienced a ftf or fte. It has so far provided consistant 2" groupings at 100 yards. Easy to field strip. Ambi fire controls. Nice feeling stock grip. Imho it is neat looking. Things I don't particualrily enjoy: The stock magazine I received was terrible. It has also been finicky with other cut down ar mags. It is a bit front heavy. Stock forearm on the SCM at the time I bought it felt awkward. When I purchased it the rear buis was a flimsy little piece of metal. Purchased the rear diopter and that has worked pretty well. The version I bought did not come with muzzle break. As a result it is extremely loud. Good for a giggle factor. Not bad outside, but indoors doubling up on ear protection is a must. Cost 25% more than the Bushmaster I bought after this. I still shoot it occasionally, but for the classes I've taken I've used the AR because it is lighter, easier to perform side to side transitions, and the stock irons are good.

I was considering buying one so I rented one at Classic Pistol in PA. I'm glad I did because overall I found it unpleasant to shoot due to very snappy recoil, imho oddly placed controls, and what felt like an odd grip shape. You might love it, but seriously test fire one first.

If you decide to go the SA route here is a link to a company that produces the shell catcher. In my experience it works really well when shooting singles. Doubles obviously are another story. http://www.tandsshellcatcher.com/prod02.htm They make them for many brands of shotguns.

Do yourself a favor and go to a range that rents and try out several of the pistols before you buy. I consider the rental $ some of the best I ever spent outside of classes. I had my heart set on a Beretta M92 and a Glock, but after shooting them next to a few Sigs, Cz's, and an M&P I changed my mind. I'm not dismissing either brand of pistol, but for my hand they weren't a good fit and I saved my self a lot of hassle and $ finding this out before buying.

Wicen's is a good place with a few quirks. Targets are stapled to stands and set out at the various range markers. There is one berm at the 100 yard line for rifle and 25 yard line for pistol iifc. There are concrete brick in the ground to help identify the ranges in 25 yard increments. The stands and stalers are provided. In my experience only paper/carboard targets have been allowed. They are very much concerned with safety. I've been there 6 times at varying levels of business and there was one RO per 3-4 'lanes.' I've never been muzzle swept there unlike Range 14 (which I also really like, but one RO in the tower has a lot of ground to observe. The RO's I've met have been friendly, respectful, and helpful without being overbearing. Provided it isn't peak business time (beginings of hunting season)you can leave your stuff and go get lunch or visit Tanner's for ammo etc. For rifles you shoot from the provided benches which are inside large concrete drainage hubs (I don't know the technical term). This does tend to reflect sound so decent hearing protection is a must. For pistol you can shoot either standing or sitting. Rapid fire is not allowed and I've heard RO's politely, but firmly ask folks to slow it down to one shot every two seconds or so. Overall it's a really nice place to shoot.

I've got one. It uses the same mags as my 452 and I have both 5 and 10 round versions. It took approximately 150 rounds to break-in the trigger spring which would stick preventing reset on occasion. It doesn't stick anymore and cycles nicely with CCI Standard Velocity. It does seem to be picky with ammunition. It did not like the Federal or Eley I tried to put through resulting in ftf and fte. Fit and finish is on par with the other CZ rifles I've owned which is overall excellent. Take down is fairly straight forward, but will require a screw driver and the bolt spring quide to reassemble. One is provided with the rifle, but an extra is a good idea as it is plastic. Accuracy with the CCI at 23 yards so far has been spot on. I hope to get outdoors soon if the rain ever stops.

Second for Mel Katz. I've transfered three rifles through him and each time it was easy. $35 + Nics.

I purchased a tritium front sight from Troy almost two years ago and the last time I went shooting the front sight post fell off. It didn't look broken, but would not reset into the housing. I emailed Troy and they promplty sent a UPS shipping lable, five days later I received the sight back in working order and they also paid for the return shipping. After a few very difficult experiences with other companies it was a real pleasure to be taken care of in a professional manner.
