  1. If anyone is interested, I have two (2) tickets for The Eagles concert at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The concert is this coming Thursday, July 18, at 8:00 PM. I was going to the concert with my sister-in-law, but she is having emergency back surgery so she can't go and I want to stay close to home while she's in the hospital. I have ticket insurance, but I decided that if anyone here is interested in the tickets I'd be happy to sell them for face-value---$434.20 (ticket price + Ticketmaster fees). The tickets are in Section 108, Row M, Seats 13 and 14. If anyone is interested, please PM me. I can transfer "ownership" of the tickets through Ticketmaster and they'll be ready for you to print.
  2. Just got back from the range a little while ago. I'm still in awe of the great range and atmosphere that Anthony created. He was showing some of the pistols and long-guns that will be available for rental (maybe this week) and it's a beautiful sight. The friendliness and comfortable professionalism of the staff can't be said enough. As a relatively new female shooter I never thought that I'd be comfortable enough to go to a range on my own, but Anthony and his range quickly got rid of that concern. IMHO, those new to firearms and/or women, this is the place to go to learn and practice. The availability of great classes aside, the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and comfortable. Nice restrooms and a cafe are definite plusses. Again, super job, Ant. I just keep smiling every time I go to the range. ** This is an unpaid and unsolicited endorsement! **
  3. Anthony, what a list. Your collection is a thing of beauty and a joy to behold!
  4. I went to RTSP this afternoon with my nephew, who finally got his FID and P2P after waiting 7 months! They had exactly what he wanted---a Sig Sauer P226 in .40 cal. The NICS check took only 5 or 10 minutes and he was able to get 4 boxes of ammo to go along with his purchase, so he's set for a little while. The guys there were great, helpful and patient, even though there were a bunch of people who wanted to sign-up to shoot in the range (only about a 10- to 15-minute wait). I even left my M&P 9mm so their gunsmith can do an Apex trigger-job for me. I bought the parts, but decided that it might be above my comfort level. I mentioned that I'm a member at Woodland Park and the guy said that it was a great place---he seemed to be sincere. I'm guessing that there's a "friendly" competition between the two establishments, but I think it's great to have two fantastic ranges and shops serving two areas of northern NJ. It was my first time at RTSP although that's where my nephew shoots because he lives in Randolph and it's a nice place. I think the expansion will definitely benefit the people who live in that area.
  5. Picked up a Sig Sauer P226 at RTSP this morning (for my nephew, the P2P barely had time to burn a hole in his pocket before he put it to good use). The NICS check took maybe 5 minutes. The guys at RTSP were great and while it took my NICS check 3 weeks about a month ago, it was pretty instantaneous today. Definite improvement.
  6. Here's the only picture of my only revolver, a Smith and Wesson model 67-5. I bought it brand new a few months ago, but soon noticed that the barrel is canted/clocked to the left. Not happy!!!! The revolver is back with Smith and Wesson for repair under warranty; I sure hope they do a good job. I'm not counting on too much based on what I've seen and heard from others. Ultimately, if I can get another P2P, I'd like to sell the 67-5 and buy a model 15, preferably blued. In the case of a revolver, I'm thinking that some of the older ones were put together better and with more "quality control." I know that there are always problems, but the number of canted barrels in the newer revolvers is kind of scary.
  7. As a woman, I really like shooting the full-size M&P9. It was my first gun and the one I always go back to when I want to do some fun shooting at the range. I have small hands and the small grip palm-swell fits my hand perfectly; the M&P9 also comes with medium- and large-sized palms swells so it should fit just about everyone. It took me about a day to get really comfortable with the slide. There have been some complaints about a "gritty trigger" on the M&P9, but I haven't experienced that at all, I find it smooth. My very first shots were on target and I give a lot of credit to the gun, it really is a nice shooter. I feel minimal recoil, probably because the gun is a little heavy, but that's a good thing. I bought the "breast cancer" edition of the M&P9 so it has pink (and black) palm swells/grips and the awareness ribbon engraved on the slide. This version has different sights than the standard full-size M&P9 (mine has a fiber optic front sight and a Warren tactical rear sight, while the standard full-size M&P9 has a white dot dovetail front sight and a steel low profile carry rear sight). Being we can't carry in NJ, I'd suggest getting her a firearm with a little size and weight to it. I'm finding they make controlling the gun and recoil so much easier than I anticipated. The M&P9 is very easy to field strip and clean after shooting at the range, I actually find it relaxing. It's most important that she feel comfortable with the gun, so let her handle a few while she decides. Remember, she may not be able to coordinate all of the movements right away, like racking the slide or dropping the magazine, but if she likes the overall gun the rest will follow quickly. It did for me and I love my M&P9 with the pink palm-swells/grip. Good luck. If your wife has any questions, ask her post them so a few of us women can answer her directly.
  8. Great time had by all. Anthony and crew really went all-out to make this a fantastic day for people to see the range and meet others. John, I'm looking forward to cherry pancakes in the near future!
  9. John, it sounds like we were there at the same time. I agree, the people and range are awesome. I joined this morning and can't wait until the official opening. The facility is absolutely incredible and is a very welcome addition to what's available in NNJ. There is a lot of space at each port, I can't imagine anyone feeling cramped; lots of lounge space; classrooms; and a full cafe. There are 25-yard and 50-yard ranges, and no bullet holes in the ceiling yet! Congratulations to Anthony and company, you all did a fantastic job!
  10. Sorry about that, I fixed my post. I'll buy breakfast!
  11. ^^^^Both of these!^^^^^ The more I'm reading, the more disappointed I am. This reminds me of the rally in Trenton, it turned into those who were going versus those who weren't/couldn't go. Minimal understanding and common ground. For all the talk about how "we" have to stand-up to the anti people, when push comes to the shove I don't see a whole lot of "we"! How about rallying around Anthony and applauding him for putting up a lot of $ so we have a great range available to us in this area. I haven't seen anything requiring anyone to join. Anthony and Gun For Hire have always stood up for everyone's 2A rights, front and center, and at the very least he deserves a pat on the back for his new venture. His $, his range, his rules. That's called free enterprise and that's the way it's supposed to be in this country; it's sad to see how many people have lost sight of that basic concept. Again, congratulations to Anthony and everyone at Gun For Hire. I'll be joining Dave, John, and Sandy for breakfast!
  12. This is the beauty of freedom, opinions, options, etc. There are a number of ranges to choose from, different ranges have different fees (incurred different ways by the shooters), we the people can choose which range to use, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and no one's opinion is right or wrong---it's an opinion. These days, to see anything positive about firearms---including the opening of a brand-new range---is good for our community. As for me, I will gladly support this new range because it meets all of my needs/wants for a range and is less than 15-minutes from my home. I've been to the Bullet Hole, now I have what I consider to be a better option. I'm looking forward to the tour, to joining the range, and to taking my first shots at this range. The best of luck to Anthony and everyone at Gun For Hire!
  13. You make a very good point regarding a purple Ruger. My first firearm is the full-size M&P 9 mm "breast cancer awareness" edition with a pink back-strap and an awareness ribbon engraved on the slide. The fact that it isn't all black has actually interested some of my friends and they've started asking questions about shooting, ranges, etc. In fact, one friend who was extremely anti-gun is now willing to go to the range with me and a few other women to try shooting. Put the black back-strap on my M&P and she would shudder, but the pink back-strap opens it up to conversation. The media has painted all firearms as "assault weapons," so being able to see a handgun in a color other than black tends to make it look less lethal. Of course the color has nothing to do with the action of the handgun, but for many it makes the firearm more approachable. That's a great first-step toward a possible convert or at least opening the line of communication. Not everyone will respond to a different color, but I'm finding that many of my friends are finding it interesting.
  14. Update to my original post. IMHO, a good way to drive more women away from the topic of firearms is to make "funny" remarks such as telling them that they can buy special range shoes. Many women will find that offensive and that only serves to support the stereotype that gun-owners are ignorant chest-thumping men who spit and scratch themselves. I know that's not true, just like I know that a woman isn't going to consider firearms because of new shoes or a new purse. I would hope that most people here understand that, too. Men vs women aside, we need to show maturity and support each other. There are enough "antis" in this world that we shouldn't turn on each other. Remember, there are people who may just be considering firearms, and who find and read these messages as lurkers. We're not going to win any supporters through insults and juvenile "jokes." We can't generalize any group of men or women, everyone has different reasons for being interested in firearms or even for being anti-firearms. Life experiences tend to shape a lot of what we believe and who we become. People have different reasons for getting interested in firearms---family histories, the current state of this country, desire for a new hobby/sport, even basic curiosity. It would be great if we could welcome everyone into our group so they feel comfortable with the people who own firearms. I think that's a major step toward changing the current media-created picture of gun ownership. As always, just my opinion. Now, back to the original post by the OP.
  15. I'm a more-than-middle-aged woman and here's what got me interested: 1. I was never "anti," but I never really thought about firearms 2. My husband died 3. Started thinking about firearms 4. Found my perfect firearm (M&P 9 mm Julie Golob edition, see my avatar) 5. Applied for FID and P2P...and waited...and waited 6. Got my FID, P2P, and finally took possession of my M&P 9 mm 7. Took firearm to range and shot it 8. Completely hooked! Obviously, it's preferable that you all skip Step 2!! However, if you can get your wife to the range to shoot, she might just get hooked on it. I went with another woman who is an experienced shooter and we spent our range-time working on my first shots, which was a great experience. My biggest fears---and I'm guessing the biggest fears of most women (and maybe men?)---were the recoil and the noise. Muffs with ear-plugs took care of the big noise and I felt minimal recoil with my 9 mm, so after a couple of shots I wasn't afraid anymore. One more thing, I watched YouTube videos before getting my firearm regarding cleaning, shooting, etc. A lot of the Hickok45 videos make it all look easy and fun. That took some of the mystery out of the equation for me. I field-stripped and cleaned my firearm before taking it to the range, so I was more comfortable with the mechanics of how the gun works. For me, there is less fear if I understand it better. Personally, I think that a lot of women who are "anti" are more scared about the *idea* of a gun than are actually anti-gun. Once that fear and "mystique" about firearms is somewhat resolved, your wife might be more open to it. Don't push and don't keep bringing it up---we hate that! Try to introduce her to a few (pre-screened) YouTube videos. After that, see if she'd be willing to take an NRA Basic Pistol class so she can make an "educated decision"---don't assume or tell her that she'll want a firearm after this, just keep your fingers crossed. If there is a woman's class, that would be even better. Another option is an individual lesson (that's what I'm doing at GFH). Having a positive shooting experience with a qualified instructor will probably give you the best chance of success, at least in my opinion. YMMV and you know your wife best, but you taking her to the range, even with other people, probably won't do it and just might make her more uncomfortable. You need to be supportive and respectful of her individual learning experience, and then see if that changes her mind. Again, just my opinion. Sorry about the long post and good luck!
  16. Based on my first experience at the Bullet Hole, I have to agree with this. I found the staff to be cordial and helpful, and there weren't any "gangsters" in the shop or ports. I'll be going back. Of course, the fact that I went with irishpete'swife (Sandy) for my first shots at the Bullet Hole definitely made the experience more pleasant. To the OP, personally I wouldn't hesitate about putting a deposit on anything at the Bullet Hole. However, as mentioned by others, I suggest applying for your P2P ASAP because these days 6-months could be cutting it closed (depending on your home town).
  17. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I have my FID and P2Ps. It took 7 weeks from the day that I submitted my paperwork to get my FID and P2Ps. If I remember correctly, the PD sent the reference letters the week after I submitted my application. Good luck.
  18. 7 weeks for me in Fair Lawn, too. My NICS check lasted from Tuesday AM (2/11) to Friday PM (2/15).

    NJ NICS

My NICS went in last Tuesday morning (February 12). I got my call on Friday mid-afternoon (February 15). So mine took just about 4 days.
  20. Vlad, thanks for highlighting that quote. I honestly don't understand how Cryan is approved for CCW given his prior criminal activities---I even question the fact that he was granted an FID. Why isn't the so-called media picking up on that? Rhetorical question, I all ready know the answer. I don't know if Cryan's son lives in the family home, but apparently he was convicted "brutally beating" a motorist (although he only was punished with probation). I would like to know what specific security measures Cryan (Sr.) is taking to ensure that his son does not have access to his firearm(s). As I learn and experience more about NJ's gun laws, regulations, and the politicians who are inventing these laws I just shake my head in disbelief. It's frightening, really frightening...
  21. FWIW, I tried several styles of OTG safety glasses and none of them were comfortable for me. My prescription glasses aren't very large, but are very expensive---Varilux progressive lenses. However, none of the safety glasses projected far enough out to cover my glasses without rubbing against them. I tried the goggle-style (made for shooting) and while they don't make a fashion statement (well, they do, but not a statement that I think most want to make), they do provide very comfortable protection. They're vented so there hasn't been an issue with fog. I'm at a point where my eyeglass prescription changes often enough (usually annually---very nearsighted, astigmatism, 3.50+ reading glasses, etc) that I don't want to invest in a third style of eyeglasses when my Rx changes---I all ready need regular glasses and sun glasses. I'm using the Uvex S3970DF Stealth OTG Safety Goggles. They have an ANSI rating of Z87.1-2003. I got them on amazon.com for approximately $15. So far, they've worked well for me.
  22. 1. Yes 2. Yes 3. More than likely will get FID, but can depend on local police chief
  23. Isn't the mental health background check completed during initial FID and subsequent P2P applications? Theoretically, that could mean two mental health checks within 90 days (assuming P2P is valid for 90 days). That seems like a waste of time and money, and will make the wait for FID and/or P2P even longer. Also, I would be very concerned about what the state would consider to be a "mental health issue," that's a very slippery slope. What is the definition? Could we as a like-minded group even agree on a definition? I say no compromise. NJ is all ready highly regulated, there is no reason to add more roadblocks for law-abiding citizens. As has been stated multiple times, by definition criminals don't follow the law so additional firearm laws will do absolutely nothing to curb crime. Quite honestly, I am amazed at the number of people who don't seem to understand that concept---including our politicians.
  24. Congratulations. I live in Fair Lawn and submitted my FID and 2 P2Ps the same day as you---12/21. I haven't gotten my call yet, but maybe I can hope to hear something this week...? When did you have your fingerprints done? Mine were done on 12/27. I know that my reference letters were returned quickly, so everything is covered on my end. Again, congratulations...and I have to admit that I'm a little jealous!
