Any updates on James Kaleda
wooly bugger replied to revenger's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
This. The timing of the arrest was also suspicious, coming right before the Trenton hearings. -
I voted for the CZ 455, but that's based on my experience with my CZ 452. It's a beautiful and well-made rifle. I've heard good things about the Savages. When I made my choice, I went with the CZ for the better workmanship.

NJ FID/PP Compliancy Project
wooly bugger replied to Maksim's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
I'm at 7 weeks and just checked in with my local PD. They told me that they have to send a letter to the town where I used to have an FID for my records there. I would have thought whatever "records" exist in my old town would have been transferred over when I did my change of address. Does this make sense to anyone? -
NJ AG asks Supremes NOT to take on Drake
wooly bugger replied to Newtonian's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
If by some miracle, they plan to reject the 3CA ruling without a hearing, wouldn't it take a few weeks or months to write the decision? I that case, do they just keep delaying it until the decision is written, or will they tell us they've overturned the ruling and then we wait for the decision? -
What Will SCOTUS Do

Newtonian, you are a serious downer. One of the good things that could come of this case, even if it rules against us, is that the rules of scrutiny could be clarified, which would put some limitations on the capricious barriers that legislators could place. -
I'd like to apply, as I spend a lot of time working in CT. Is it effectively "shall-issue" for non-residents? Any issues or pitfalls I should be aware of?

What Will SCOTUS Do

This is not a f'ing game show, and I wish our courts would stop treating it as such. They were supposed to decide on it today. Instead, they heard dozens of far lower profile cases and continue to toy with, what to anyone with a brain, should be straightforward. I liked the idea of them writing a summary judgment, slapping down the 3CA opinion without even a hearing. I doubt that's what's happening, but I can fantasize. -

WTF just happened here? Are they trying to give us all a heart attack? Why isn't it on the list? Surreal. -

If I were them I'd make it OC only, having a gun in the car is considered concealed, and same rules of transport apply. So we'd be effectively limited to carrying within walking distance of our house or a range. And if your neighbor calls to complain, you get arrested for disturbing the peace. We'll cross that bridge if we get there. -
What Will SCOTUS Do

I wonder if we could have a "half victory," where they rule against CC but clarify scrutiny. That could actually be more like a 3/4 victory, because it would pave the way to take down all sorts of arbitrary and capricious laws. -

Which legal experts? Given the compelling case in Peruta and the asinine reasoning in Drake, I don't see how they can rule against us, but I've learned to be very cynical of our judiciary. -
This is nothing new. The same or a similar bill was introduced last year and wasn't even brought to committee. At this point, it's all political kabuki (I hate that term, BTW, because it makes no sense in this context,) because they know CC will veto. I don't know what the political motive is, especially this late in the legislative calendar. Maybe she wants her name in the local paper. Maybe they have some nefarious strategy to delay putting a bunch of bills on CC's desk, and that's why they delayed the 10 round bill. I have no idea how these morons think. To be honest, I'm glad they're introducing this, because I think the next round of judicial combat is going to have to be about the contours of "common use." In my mind, the one feature line crosses the line, because it pretty much bans every production AR-type rifle out there, and AR is the most popular platform in the country. Sure, you can get around it with one of the new NY-compliant stocks, but that's not the point. One observation I want to add is that, I have to admit, after last year, I have felt like going to Trenton is a waste of time. But I realize a lot of good came of it this year. We got one of the tyrants to put his foot in his mouth by mentioning a magazine exchange, and Collandro gave them a taste of just how expensive that would be. We don't know, but that may be one of the reasons why the bill is on ice. And it have a platform to launch that young girl into the national spotlight, which can only do us good. Last year, we got "confiscate, confiscate, confiscate" on tape, and it's possible that by raising the profile of the committee hearing, we gave Cryan a public forum in which to tell Sweeney to FU when he defected on the "centerpiece bill." Don't give up the fight.

No, I think it's a highly scientific number based on the number of rounds a 1911 holds, so they can claim that they're not doing away with all handguns in common use. It makes no sense attached to an AWB, but I believe that was the intention in the SAFE act. So it became the new magic number they need to meet not to be outdone by their neighbors.

Anyone in Ocean County that can help me take apart an M1?
wooly bugger replied to Blake's topic in Gunsmithing
Wish I were closer so I could help. There's really not that much you can screw up. Pulling the trigger guard back is the hardest part. It helps to put a bullet in the hole to give you some leverage. Then there's a little bit of brisk tapping to separate the action from the stock, and it's smooth sailing from there. -
What Will SCOTUS Do
wooly bugger replied to maintenanceguy's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
I don't even want to think about it right now. I need to maintain my sanity and focus on other parts of life. A couple of years ago, I would be sure they'd hear it, because of the obvious split and the clamor of amici, and that they'd rule in favor, based on simple logic. Having read some of the anti opinions and the Harvard Law Review articles that were linked here recently, I've lost most of my faith in the idea of an impartial judiciary. Many or judges and especially academics seem to decide on the desired outcome and torture logic to reach that outcome. The arguments I've seen against 2A are disheartening. Especially in the HLS article about the "homebound 2A." -
I think "common use" is going to be the next wave of litigation after CCW. I heard on NPR just today (yes, I still listen) that the judge in the Tresmond case struck down the 7 round limit. Was that based on common use? I would think that a one feature AWB test violates common use, because it bans anything remotely resembling the most popular rifle in the US. On a side note, the NPR piece was about the looming "assault weapon" registration deadline in NY and how even the people who want to register can't figure out how. The state police refused to be interviewed, and they said that Cuomo isn't talking about it. They also said that violation of the registration requirement is a (presumably expungeable) class A misdemeanor, and it's unlikely anyone will be prosecuted unless they're caught in the commission of a crime. This is from NPR. Interesting.

The most expensive knife I've owned is a Sebenza. I was disappointed at how much rougher it was to open than my $60 Benchmade Griptilian. I ended up losing it while high-knee marching through thick, marshy weeds while pheasant hunting in SD. I think I'll stick with my production knives for now. -
The end of airport firearms transport?
wooly bugger replied to SJG's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
I see a business opportunity for an off duty or retired cop, especially in the NYC airports. This person could offer a service of physically carrying your pistol from your car to the check in counter. That way, you're never in possession outside of of your car and therefore protected by FOPA. Probably not enough volume going through to make it worth while but just an idea. -
When my permits come in, in chronological order: 1) Sig P938 2) Walther PPQ M2 3) S&W 41 4) S&W 686 That should cover all the categories for a handgun newbie...for now. At some point, I'm sure I'll discover a "need" for Glock 17, a Sig P226, a Beretta 92F, a snubbie, and a rimfire revolver. This isn't counting the occasional long gun that I'm forced to buy. A Beretta 686 is beckoning to me.

I've done it twice without a hitch. But that's with long guns. Never tried a handgun.
