  1. When I was a kid, we had a wood stove in the kitchen. My dad ran a piece of ductwork through the basement that had a heat register right behind the wood stove and the other end terminated in the living room. An in line duct fan pulled heat from the woodstove into the living room and forced a little air circulation through the house. It worked pretty well.
  2. Plastic film on your windows. You're losing a lot of heat that way. A temp fix for your hot upstairs and cold downstairs: Stop letting your baseboards release so much heat upstairs and help them release more heat downstairs. Insulate some of the upstairs baseboards. Throw a blanket over it, push a couch against it, stop air from flowing freely around them and you'll get less heat upstairs. Now, you've got some extra heat that you can use downstairs. Increase air flow around your downstairs baseboards. Pull furniture a few inches away from the walls to let air flow. Set up a couple of small floor fans blowing on the baseboards downstairs. We also live in an old farm house. When it gets in the teens, we slide the couch away from the living room wall and set up a small floor fan blowing behind the couch. Huge difference. Also do the touch test. Make sure your downstairs baseboards are getting hot. You may have a valve that's adjusted to push more heat upstairs.
  3. I agree that non residents should not be treated better than residents but I don't believe that it's morally correct to harm non residents just to make sure they don't have an advantage. If my neighbor has a nicer house, nicer car, better job than I do, I'm able to be happy for him. I don't want to see him fail so I can feel better about my circumstances.
  4. Agreed. I had a dealer in Memphis tell me that he couldn't sell me a shotgun because he didn't know NJ's rules and didn't want to break the law. No problem, no hard feelings. They guy was honest with me. The issue here is that the original offer stated " ITEMS MAY BE PICKED UP AT STORE." I'll make the purchase as agreed but this is part of what was agreed.
  5. I found a rifle for sale on Gunbroker from a FFL in Virginia. The auction said " ITEMS MAY BE PICKED UP AT STORE." I was looking for a day trip for next week so figured this would be chance for my 10 year old to take a drive and pick up the rifle. I double checked with the Virginia State Police's website and it gives instructions for purchasing a shotgun or rifle by an-out-of-state resident. Seems legal to do. So...I bid and win. I then email the seller and tell him I'll be picking it up next week and ask for their street address and hours. The reply says "Unfortunately i have to ship it to NJ if that is where you're a resident of. New Jersey residents cant buy guns in Virginia." I reply with the link and copied text from the VASP website that says non-residents can purchase long guns in VA. Next reply from seller says "We do not sell to NJ residents as per the ATF firearm guidelines. I can ship it to NJ for you but you may not purchase it face to face in VA" I haven't replied yet and can't find any such ATF firearm guidelines. By the time I add shipping and transfer fee, the gun isn't worth the price any more. So I plan to reply with three options (1) They sell to me in their store as their ad said they would or (2) They provide me with a link, section of the regulation, or scan of the "ATF firearm guidelines". If such a guideline really exists, It's my fault for not knowing the law and I'll pay the shipping and transfer fee. or (3) They cancel the sale. Right now, no money has changed hands. Before I reply on Tuesday, I wanted to see if anyone here could confirm their claim that there is an AFT Firearm Guideline that prevents a VA FFL from selling to a NJ resident. I know there is a book, published by the AFT for FFL's that tells the rules for each state to help FFL's stay legal when making non-resident sales. I've looked for a copy but can't find it. I'd really appreciate a link to a copy of that book. Thanks.
  6. I've been but not every year. I go without a plan and just wander around. I can see all I want to see in one day but it takes all day. Don't even try the weekend. Pick the coldest, rainiest, snowiest, worst weekday when nobody else wants to drive or leave the house. Get there before they open for the day. By noon, you can be fighting crowds. I'll be taking a day off of work to go.
  7. This is why I don't buy pretty guns. It's not that I don't like pretty guns, I just know that I'll scratch it up the first time I open the box.
  8. I don't know any details but transporting a handgun is illegal in NJ - even locked in the trunk. FOPA protects you if you travel from a place where you can possess a firearm to a place where you can possess a firearm - so no good if coming into NJ.
  9. No no. I stopped there. Was about 30 minutes early for a meeting in Trenton and figured it would be a good place to catch up on some email before my meeting. Not a good place to catch up on email.
  10. Cleaning the barrel takes seconds. I don't see the need even if it does work. Now, give me a shotgun shell that will clean and lubricate the whole gun and I'll take a case.
  11. Good luck. I remember a similar fight several years ago with hundreds of us filling two hearing rooms and a huge overflow crowd in front of the capital building. Two dozen anti gun families were brought in from Newtown. Hundreds showed up to speak against the new anti-gun laws in Trenton. I didn't count but I bet there were 1,500 of us or more. We got our names on the list and took turns addressing the law and public safety committee all day speaking against the 21 new anti gun bills being considered. They ran out of time before everyone had a chance to speak. At the end of they day, they voted in favor of every single bill. They don't care what we think.
  12. The above post is very important. I'm quoting just to make sure nobody misses what is said there.
  13. Three problems with bitcoin, in my opinion: (1) Governments want to be the only ones creating currency. Since bitcoin is created without a central authority, they haven't been able to stop it...yet. As soon as they figure out how to break it, they will. I'm sure they're already working on it. (2) Buy low and sell high. I'm not buying now. (3) I can't think of any world event that has caused the value of bitcoin to go up 10X in the last year. That means the increase in price has been created only in people's minds. That's a fragile thing. I know the bitcoin believers will have reasons that bitcoin has increased so much. If so, please share your math that demonstrates the cause. No math, no reason.
  14. My smallest and largest NAA mini-revolver "hogleg" .22LR with .22Mag conversion cylinder. 3" Taurus Judge .45LC / .410. I've been beat up before for owning the Judge but everyone who's ever shot it has left with a big goofy grin on their face.
  15. My very first handgun. I was a displaced farm kid moved to the big city. Where I grew up, everybody had guns. Our high school asked us to stop bringing our guns to school after we would go hunting in the morning. They were concerned someone would break into our pickups in the school parking lot to steal them. I don't think I knew anybody who didn't own at least a shotgun. We heard gunfire almost every day off in the distance, in many different directions, anytime the weather was nice. I moved to the big city and had never heard of this thing called gun control. I didn't know there were people who hated guns or that anyone would pass laws prohibiting them. I lived and worked in a sort of seedy place so I bought myself a gun...and had it with me a lot. At the time, I wasn't even aware that there were laws that frowned on this. It's a .22 Beretta 21A with the flip up barrel. Very picky on ammo but likes mini mags.
  16. I got my answer. Wife found it hidden right on the front cover of the advertisement. "In store only, limited quantities, while supplies last, no dealers, no rain checks" I'm not going to stand out in the cold with 100 other people hoping to get the 2 shotguns they have in the store so I'm out. I'll attempt to order online and see if I get lucky but it sounds like the deal isn't such a deal after all.
  17. Bass Pro has a Remington 870 for $199.97 after the sale price and rebate. I'm interested but I'm not going to the store on black Friday. I'm not even going to the store any time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Does anybody know if these deals will be available online or only in the store? If so, I'll order online during the sale and pick up the gun after Christmas.
  18. Assuming Krdshrk has the specs right: https://www.mcmaster.com/#o-rings/=7730fb8fc6cb41938c120bf0eabe5448j9y4waic
  19. The problem is that these laws will be the law, people will go to jail, people will sell (or hide) their guns. Eventually some court will knock down one little part of the new rules but the rest will stand.
  20. A bunch of us were pretty fired up about the "apply to be denied idea". As others have said, the state went to the 3rd federal circuit court and said that NJ issues permits to more than 90% of applicants so that proves that NJ isn't denying anyone their rights. Since nobody ever applies, this was true. The federal circuit court ruled that NJ's law is just fine as it is. After several weeks (maybe months) of bitching about it, a dozen of the regulars here decided to meet to work out a plan. We met with an attorney who wasn't crazy about our plan - but we weren't' discouraged. I think it fizzled when there was a lot to do and nobody really wanted to take on the work. I had initiated the first meeting but wasn't interested in leading the group and nobody else seemed that interested either. It was then that I understood that it's a lot of work and dedication to run an organization. We may not like NJ2AS tactics sometimes (or other groups) but I appreciate the hard work those groups are willing to put in to joust at windmills. I'd apply if there was a movement but I'm not sure another case will be heard in the federal courts from NJ and I don't know that NJ would use the same argument again. Truth is, I'm not sure NJ even needs to have any sort of argument to justify it's actions.. The more I follow federal gun rights cases, it becomes obvious that the constitution, facts, and truth have little weight in court. Activist judges will do back flips to come up with contrived, ridiculous, rational to keep people from exercising their rights - facts be damned. If nothing else, i was nice to put some faces to the people on this board.
  21. If you need to modify one, do it yourself. FFL's have to log "assault weapons" that come into their shops for work and those books are reviewed by NJSP.
  22. I really enjoy (1) taking new shooters to the range and (2) shooting alone. I don't enjoy shooting with others (except for new shooters) quite as much. I've had fun a hundred times shooting with others but there are lots of times that I'm in the mood to go it alone. Taking someone, especially a new shooter, to the range is fun. The first time is always exciting and I like to be part of that. I have never taken anyone shooting for their first time who didn't leave with a big stupid grin. That's fun. But, spending time breaking clays or punching paper when I can relax, take my time, nobody else is chatting with me, I don't have to take turns, I don't have to explain anything - that's a lot of fun too.
  23. I drive my car, go fishing in a boat, and go to the range by my self all the time. Follow the same safety rules when you're alone or with others and you'll be fine.
