Good optics on a budget w/ low magnification (3x or so)
Mr.Stu replied to Lambo2936's topic in Optics & Accessories
I'm leaning towards a Vortex Strike Eagle because the 4-12x Nikon M-223 is just too big and heavy for the 3 gun comps I'm getting into. If the M-223 is what you're after, maybe you can take it off my hands for a fair price. It will come with the Nikon mount too. It definitely holds zero range trip to range trip. I zeroed it about 18 months ago and it still hits where it should. -
Thanks, Nick.

Having shot my 2nd 3 gun match at Easton this weekend I am fully convinced that the 4-12x Nikon I have sitting on my AR is just way too much glass. I'm looking for advice on what to replace it with. One option would be a smaller scope, maybe 1-6x like the Vortex Strike Eagle but that is still only a couple of ounces lighter than what I have on there now. If I went for a red dot I think I'd need some kind of magnifier for the long range shots. How well do these work on a hinged mount? What else should I be thinking about? Please let me have your ideas. Thanks, Stu

Yeah, thanks for setting it up MJ. ...and Ed, you're welcome. Nice to see your face yesterday, it's a shame you couldn't stay for the match.

Easton now three gun only as of march.
Mr.Stu replied to Golf battery's topic in Competitive & Fun Shoot Discussion
Ken wanted to run 4 squads tomorrow and has asked me to run the 4th squad. Therefore, Sandy and I are now on squad 4. Mikeyjones, if you can bring the powder Sandy asked for in your PV order, we'll have the cash for you. -
Rather than digging into your wall would a piece of furniture make more sense? Dan does really good work and is an active supporter of shooters in NJ. http://www.njconceal.co/

I got a call from Cabelas. They can't take ammo back so they offered me a deal at half price for the extra shells. They first asked if I could use them. If I'd said no I suspect they'd have let me keep them for free but I'm not that kind of arse.

Cabelas are having a bad time I think. I got home Friday night to find 2 boxes from them on my front step. Great! it's the 2 boxes of birdshot I ordered. Each of the brown cardboard boxes contained 2 boxes of birdshot. They filled and shipped a single order twice. Both boxes even had identical packing slips. I called them this morning and this lovely lady on the phone siad "Oh dear, shells are not returnable. Looks like Christmas came early for you". She's kicked it up to management and they'll give me a call next week with the final word on whether they want me to keep them or not.

The objective isn't to kill the assailant anyway. It is to incapacitate him or her as soon as possible to stop the threat. If I ground up a .22 bullet and put it in your food it might lead to lead poisoning and kill you but would be useless as a method of defending an attack.

We are hosted by SCFGPA which is a small indoor range. Therefore we can only run 1 shooter at a time which means we go slower than ranges with multiple bays. As a result we limit the number of shooters each month so we can all get home at a decent hour. This month's match is full with a stacked wait list. If you want to come and watch, you are more than welcome, but you won't get to shoot this month. If you want to shoot next month, please book a spot by going to http://www.somersetidpa.com/matches and follow the link to sign up. I'll create the sign up page for next month next week.

Yes, we have an indoor range and the roof only leaks a little bit, so rain or shine, we'll be running the match. As for your poor old eyes, perhaps you don't realize, but the ideal target area on an IDPA target is an 8" circle on the chest. There is also a 6" x 6" square for the head. If you miss the down-0 areas there is still 18" x 24" of target which still counts. Most of the shots will be 5-15 yards. We're not talking bullseye precision here.

It doesn't seem to work from s phone. Use a real computer and it works -
Look at the Ram 1500. The coil springs on the back end make it ride better than any other full size truck. I love mine and frequently get positive comments from passengers. Mileage will always suck in a truck because they have the aerodynamics of a shed. Dodge have started offering a diesel in the 1500 but I don't know if it's sluggish or not. I like my hemi.

FPID Change of Address
Mr.Stu replied to ChrisJM981's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
It seems even NJSP are inconsistent. Sgt. Hollar out of Augusta is great. He called my references within 2 hours of dropping off my FPID address change application. It still took the boys in Trenton over 2 months, but 5 months! You have a local problem too. -
Is Somerset IDPA happening this Sunday?

Sorry I missed this discussion so far. Yes the match is on. The new shooter briefing will start shortly after 11 I hope. We'll cover safely drawing and holstering as well as some of the main rules. As you said there are many rules and you don't need to know them all for your first match. We'll teach you as you go along. Unless you're really special you're not going to be burning the range down for your first few matches. There's a lot to take in if you've only shot on a square range before. Don't worry, keep your head and be safe - only go as fast as you can think. I garrentee you will enjoy yourself and you'll get faster and more competitive as you learn. See you on Sunday. Stu. PS. If you really want to get on the match director's good side, show up at 10 and help build the stages. -
There is a common mistake being made here. Many of the stupid things in Jersey are blamed on "population density" and people think that it means too many people in a small space. This is incorrect. The reason the same awful politicians keep getting voted back in, the taxes are so high, the roads are falling apart, the tolls are heading ever skywards, you can't have a carry permit, people can't drive to save their lives, et cetera, et cetera is because the population is dense. That is to say, people are stupid and refuse to use the brains they were born with.

Surprising pro gun video at the Asbury Park Press
Mr.Stu replied to Zack's topic in General Discussion
The reporter was a nice guy. I was there for some of the filming. -
Welcome aboard. Hook up with Sandy's group. They are a good bunch. I help them out with RSOing a port if they have a busy meet up with lots of new folks. They do kids events too if there's a Mrs. Peel, Jr.

I'd also look at availability of NJ legal mags. Springfield refuse to make anything but 17 round mags for the 9mm XDm so you have to get modded ones. Glock 17/34 you can get 10's but if you go for a G22/35 the standard mag is 15 rounds. I don't know about the M&P line. The XDm trigger is easily remedied with a kit from Powder River Precision.

If your soon to be ex wife turns nasty, one of the standard tactics in this state is to make a domestic violence complaint. Just being upset because you argued is sufficient grounds to have a judge sign off on a temporary restraining order which will almost always require the seizure of all your firearms. This being NJ, there is no guarantee that you will get them back - I know it's not fair, but that's the way it is. If you have had a firearm seized and not returned to you, the Brady law kicks in and you ate now a prohibited person at the federal level. Can you fight it? Sure...and win? Maybe. It's far simpler not to have any firearms seized in the first place. FSS provide a service where they take ownership as an FFL and basically promise not to sell them to anyone else so long as you pay them a storage fee. I'm hoping to get mine back soon. I'm waiting on permits.
