First time post just joined this site.
I’m a NYC resident with a NYC permit for rifle/shotgun. I had gone into Cheyenne on Sunday as I purchase all my hunting items there. I am in the market for a new shotgun. Looked at a few and I was under impression gun had to be shipped to FFL in NYC. Guy behind counter told me if I applied for a NJ FID card I wouldn’t have to ship it and go through FFL? I applied on Monday through NJ state police so I’m waiting no for permit. Someone else no had told me regardless it will still need to go through FFL in NYC? I’m just trying to save the money on the shipping plus the FFL transfer fee.
Anyone have any knowledge of what’s correct.

Thanks

Ralph

I'm not familiar with NY or NYC laws but generally if the long gun is legal in your State you can purchase anywhere and take it home with you.

Only handguns and "others" have to be shipped FFL to FFL.

I see no reason you couldn't purchase a shotgun and take it back to NYC with you.  Once back in NYC you may have to register it there?  Check your ocal NYC laws.

If you aren't a NJ resident I don't know how you would get a NJ FID.

I know I can get a NJ FID card as a non resident. I can also get one as a dual resident I’m just not sure about the NYC registration part that the guy in Cheyenne told me. Unfortunately no one works full time anymore at the NYC firearm location so been trying to call them direct but no answer.

If you are a dual resident get your NJ FID.  That allows you to buy long guns in NJ   Make sure what you are buying is NYC legal if your intention is to take it to NYC.  Then research NYC laws and if legal take it to your permanent NYC residence and follow all local NYC laws.  Maybe it will save you a few dollars in transfer fees?

Very few ppl on a NJ Firearm forum are going to be knowledgeable about NYC Firearm laws.  And any advice you receive online is worth what you paid for it.

Ultimately YOU and YOU alone are responsible for knowing the law.  I wouldn't take advice from anyone online as to what is legal or illegal.  Especially when asking about areas outside of NJ.  You'll get enough wrong answers here about NJ laws never mind NYC Firearm laws.

Also, take what gun store employees tell you with a HUGE grain of salt.  They are in the business of selling firearms to mostly local residents.  And they are there to sell firearms.  Not dispense legal advice.

If you are a NYC resident and you have a NYC permit for a shotgun, why not just buy from a NY gunstore or FFL?  Sounds like you are making life more complicated for yourself than it has to be.

Not many stores in NY locally. I live in Staten Island and there is none. Closest is D and F in Brooklyn which I have purchased from many years ago. I know what’s legal and what’s not as far as firearms. I’m only looking for a 20 ga over under. Most likely a Beretta 687 which Cheyenne had in stock. Not taking anyones advice on any forum as law just was looking to see if someone had come across this situation themselves. Been a NYC gun owner since I’m 18 (time when I was able to apply) 55 now and have not purchased a shotgun in a while.
Thanks

So to follow up I got the answers I needed directly from NYC Rifle/Shotgun Bureau.
Once I get my NJ non resident FID card I can purchase a rifle/shotgun from dealer in NJ. I can take it home with me that day. I still would need to register it with 72 hours at a NYC FFL.
Definitely helps some as I can go anywhere in NJ if I found what I wanted and save a bunch on shipping.
Thanks for all who helped.

The Instant Criminal background check has been taking over 96 hours as of late so I would count on a return trip.

No big deal. My concern was shipping cost and transfer fees. No need to add extra cost to the purchase.
