Does anybody know art???

I am looking around just to get a basic value, not true appraisal of some items that I picked up when I lived in europe. I have a 17th century painting and other items that I dont know much about, just looking for someone that kind of knows what they are looking at. I have always been curious about them, but dont know a damn thing about art.

Your post is hardly specific enough for a response. If you think they really have some value, Google "Appraisers" and maybe narrow that search down geographically. There are a lot of general appraisers, but you will get the truest value by going with a specialist in the area of fine art you are having appraised. You will need an appraisal in order to get an insurance rider on your home policy.

 

You may also want to check the auction houses (Christie's, Sotheby's etc.) - most have branches in NYC - sometimes they have free appraisals ala Antique Road Show and will have experts in the various fields on hand.

I had good luck contacting Christie's in London. They were interested in my friend's guns and called me back immediately. I recommend making a complete package of information and sending it to them.

Thanks Mr. Bob, I do appreciate it. I was not looking for insurance purposes, but just wanting to know if it is worth keeping around. My family hates the painting. I'll post pics tomorrow.
