im looking for a longer range semi automatic rifle chambered in a common round.. as far as i can tell 308 is my best bet.. so it has me between an AR and the Socom II.. the Socom averages about $500 more..

OH and if its not banned by name and as long as you dont add a pistol grip... you CAN have a flash hider.. as that is just ONE evil feature..

detachable mag 1

flash hider 2

OK

Yes if it's configured properly. Muzzle brake instead of flash hider, etc. All the standard stuff. It's not banned by name so it must not have the evil looking features.

If it doesn't have a pistol grip or bayonet lug, then a flash hider is ok.

Detachable magazine is not considered an evil feature. The Evil Feature applies IF the semi-auto rifle has a detachable magazine.

All of the current Springfield M1A rifles are NJ legal.

well correct me if im wrong (i dont mind being so).. lol but the criteria is something to the effect of "illegal if has a detachable magazine and at least two other features" so im counting the mag as strike one.. if it didnt have a detachable mag it would not even matter?

i. A semi-automatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least

two of the following:

(1) A folding or telescoping stock;

(2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;

(3) A bayonet mount;

(4) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash

suppressor; and

(5) A grenade launcher;

The magazine isn't a strike. To be illegal, the rifle would have to have a detachable magazine AND two evil features. So if there is no detachable magazine, then you can have all 5 evil features. The only thing you wouldn't be able to have would be a fixed magazine with over 15 round capacity as indicated here:

4. A semi-automatic rifle with a fixed magazine capacity exceeding 15 rounds; or

I honestly wish I bought a M1A Scout Squad instead of my AR.

I did buy one a couple years ago. Happen to stop in at Davis' in Sloatsburg, NY on my way back from the Middletown show and they had just gotten one in two days before. They had ordered it a year before they got one in, so, I grabbed it. They're very hard to find, LE agencies like them for the obvious.

If long range is your intention you would be better served with an Armalite or DPMS 308 compared to the M1A. The advantage for the AR style rifles are 2 specific areas. 1) The mounting of optics. Its just far better and far easier on an AR pattern rifle. 2) The M1A requires bedding and probably some accuracy work to get close to the AR. I have never used an M1A for long range shooting but those I know that have say its a pain in the ass to keep it maintained at a level of sufficient accuracy. None of them still use an M1A, they have all moved to the AR platform. Now if your talking minute of man at 300 and under, my points above do not apply.
