Ruger 10/22 "charger" conversion

Recommended Posts

What is the main difference between a 10/22 rifle and 10/22 charger? In other words could you convert the rifle into the pistol by changing the barrel and stock? Also if so how would title of the weapon change for future sale or purchase?

I'm pretty sure the action is exactly the same.

In terms of mechanics ONLY, yes you could convert the rifle into a pistol.. HOWEVER.. IT IS ILLEGAL under Federal Law to do such.

The Charger is sold as a pistol, where as a 10/22 is sold as a rifle.

The gist of the law is that a pistol can be turned into a rifle (If fitted with a 16" or longer barrel).. but a rifle can not be converted to have less than a 16" barrel unless you get Class 3 paperwork which is beyond the realm of possibility for a normal civilian in NJ.

Just talked to a buddy and he said the exact same! I believe it was an NSA permit he said that is necessary to convert and a special license. If the weapon is converted just based on the reciever stamp ALONE one being Std and the second being carbine its a Federal Felony!Glad to know the members are well versed in the law. That makes this forum and its members a strong resource. Thank You. :D
