Cabela's executive says Xanadu opening 'hightly unlikely'

Recommended Posts

I'm still scratching my head as to how horse racing or casinos can lose money. The mob has never had a problem making either venture profitable.

Ahh - what am I saying, the state of Nevada took over the Mustang Ranch and couldn't make money with it. (Sarcasm on) Something must be wrong with all of these businesses. We shall not examine the 'lowest common denominator'.

The Meadowland's racetrack has been losing money for years. The high end restaurants closed and betters have been reduced significantly. Years ago there was talk of tearing it down.

The entire complex has lost money for years. The Exposition / Arena has little in the way of shows since the state saw fit to build the Pru spliting the users. Next will be a money losing football stadium that can''t sell seats (except the old one through the NFLShop.Com). Season ticket holders have fled en mass. Unfortunatly the state learned too late that users will not pay any exorbitent costs to be at the game. Asking a long time season ticket holder to pay 5k per seat on top of the ticket face value and $35 for parking broke the back of supporters. I've heard more than once that former season ticket holders would buy a $2000 big screen and watch at home for less money. Single tickets are readily available to any game if the mood hits.

Most of the top end tickets were held by corporate users. Those days are gone. Corporate sponsors are limited by a lack of funding and spending it on football tickets..not going to happen. Big sponsors are given tickets and don't need to buy them.

They should have learned from the Yankees, Mets and Dallas who found few takers for the newest and best. Slashing costs hurt the bottom line.

I have to laugh as I was talking to friends with the Saint's organization. They renovated the dome (and will do more after this season) and have been selling out even in an area that has been hit hard by the economy. A stadium that is forty so years old still works fine and continues to attract Super Bowls. Yet NJ saw fit to spend 1.4 billion to replace a stadium that was thirty years or so old and would have continued to work just fine. But they needed high priced suites that they won't be able to sell.

Not much to disagree with here. The thing that blows my mind is they (NJSEA) probably finished renovating and adding skyboxes only 3 years ago. I worked on one of the re-designs back in the mid to late 90's.

Yet another example of the government thinking it knows better how to spend my money than I do.

That would make a ton of money, offering year round skiing.

I doubt it. Some would try it out once or twice. but on a steady basis, the vast majority of the population in this area is not going to use it. Too much in the facility is going to be expensive. Do you see families bring kids there dropping a hundred or so playing on those features? I don't. While I have no idea of the pricing, how long is it going to take to make one run down the slope. A minute or two? Then what? Pay again? Unless one is really into sking, during the warmer months warm weather sports tend to take over.

In any case one feature is not going to carry a venture of that magnatude. It will become a hangout for people to wander around in like all the other malls in the state.

um. yes...

You can buy a season pass, or for unlimited runs. fine, not summer, but what about fall, and all spring?

Skiing is more expensive than firearms if you figure it in. I went skiing every weekend last year, average price of a lift ticket in PA is around $45 to $50. And tons of kids go out to ski.

Tons of people also race and need to prep early. This being the only indoor skiing in the western hemisphere, is a big big draw.

Just imagine how many people would go there from nyc. Furthermore, most of the money going into snow sports is boards and skiiers going to the terrain parks... set up jumps, etc.

RS - you're obviously older, your kids are grown, and you were not part of the 'feel good, spend now, worry later' generation. I was at funplex (http://www.thefunplex.com/) in E Hanover this weekend and I was appalled at the pricing in comparison to value. It was nearly as expensive as a day at Disney, in my recollection more expensive than a day at Great Adventure and with many fewer attractions than either venue by a long shot.

Here's one more Jets season ticket holder that told the team to take a hike. To me, the PSL is a ripoff in more ways than I can count. In Cleveland for example, if you have a PSL you have first rights to any act that comes to play in the stadium. I can get my Britney Spears tickets because I "own" that seat. Only if I elect not to purchase a ticket to that show do they get to sell ticket for my seats to the general public. That sense of "ownership" is nonexistent in the new Giants stadium. Nowhere are you promised the ability to get tickets for all events there. Even if that changed, would I take turns splitting them with the Giants season ticket holder who has my corresponding seat?

Even worse, I consider the PSL to be a declining asset. A big deal was made out of the fact that you could sell your PSL for it's market value in a few years Presumably to make lots of $$$). If the price of tickets continues to rise, fewer and fewer people will be able to afford my PSL, shrinking the market for it.

Next year I will buy myself a pair of Rutgers football season ticket (for less than half the Jets tickets) and maybe a LCD big screen. Problem solved. :)

How much do you want to bet I'll be able to pick up Jets tickets for face value or less?

The attractions that were planned for Xanadu might be ok to try once or twice. But do you see people returning with any frequency? I don't. It would get old very quickly.

I know people that were on the Giant's season ticket list for almost twenty years. They have been contacted in the last few months to determine if they wanted season tickets. All turned them down. My wife still has her tickets as the people who have bought them for the past ten fifteen plus years still want them and are willing to pay the costs.

The Saints have the righ[*] idea. Keep what you have and put in some improvements every so often. Then keep ticket prices as reasonable as possible.

your kids are grown

Are you mad??? Kids would have meant not getting all those toys and not having them now. Kids would have meant I'd still be working and not retired.

Dating myself I could have gotten a three minute freefall back in Florida for $20.00. At least on a real ski slope, I could spend twenty minutes or so coming down. (depending on how many times I fell).

You'd think that - and yet thousands and thousands of people each year go here:

http://www.rockefellercenter.com/ and ice skate, round and round in a circle...

or here:

http://www.daveandbusters.com/

or here:

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/

or here:

http://www.nps.gov/moru/index.htm

and really - what is there to do at Rushmore. Four guys carved into a mountain, why go back after you've seen it the first time?

and I'm still trying to figure out the attraction of this:

http://www.rockhall.com/

but I could spend years here:

http://musclecarmuseum.com/ :D

Rock Center is a short term facility that has skating for a few months at best. It's a few dollars and people combine it with wandering around the city. They don't continually go back. The skating rink isn't there to make a profit. It's the centerpiece of some of the most expensive real estate in the world.

Disney World? How can you compare the two. One is a family vacation that spans at least several days. Xanadu? Who is going except to hang out. That's like trying to compare the failed mall with a week in the Caribbean.

In any case, the state has moved to take the property back after Cabelas made it clear they were not moving in. As no work is being done due to financial problems after bankruptcy filings the project is sinking rapidly.

What happened your new girlfriend dumped you, so you can come back to us now?? HAHAH

Nope, we're stronger than ever! I just don't concentrate on shooting much when it's cold outside of hunting.

That's a pretty lame excuse!! We've been out at least once a month every month.

I picked up a 91/30 and a M39, we are going to do a milsurp shoot, are you game or too big of a wimp?

The GOOD news is that if Cabela's has no NJ store we shouldn't have to pay sales tax on shipped items.

A bit self-centered I admit, but I would never go to the Meadowlands store anyway.

I pass it several times a week. I would be in there checking stuff on a regular basis.

This might be a marriage savior for you Dan. If you went there every week your wife might divorce you

I read that today and chuckled.

Sure it will get the building built, but they still don't have any companies to take the space!

I thinks some of that is "Field of Dreams" - if you build it, they will come... I also think that the rental rates will need to be (very) attractive, at least until they build a sales base. They really need a wide selection of retailers (and reasonably priced attractions) if they want to draw customers away from the Secaucus Outlets as well as all of the other Malls in Jersey.

the Secaucus Outlets

They are long gone. The true outlets closed up years ago. What is left is nothing more then retail stores and they are far from busy. Back in the 70's and 80's they actually were outlets from the companies on site but they vanished. In fact a lot of the commercial buildings are vacant.

The only draw today is NY residents getting tax free clothing.

I'm very familiar with Secaucus, the Harmon Cove Outlet Center is closed?, I know outlets like Levis,(used to get my Levis for $10 bucks) Gucci, and I think Mi casa closed, I did work in the area, also worked some time for UPS. My son was born in the Pig town.
