How Often to Clean/Lube

How often do you clean/lube a gun when it just sits around?

When I use to care, I would give them a quick spritz of rem-oil spray (in the aerosol can)... I never cleaned them if they were just sitting, but I would clean them before I took them out again. Just to clear whatever could have gotten into the breech.

 

They were sitting for about 5 years at one point, and I'd say every 2 or 3 months I'd hit them with a thin coat of the rem-oil, rust never sleeps.

If it is just sitting around I coat it with eezox and store it in a bore store. I have a few that have been sitting in the safe for years like that with no sign of rust.

I do a rotating PM every 3-4 months if they are sitting. If not I clean them after each use. Mostly

My S&W 686 is 12 years old. It once sat in storage for 3+ years.

 

Prior to storage, I cleaned it until every millimeter was "white glove" clean. Then a light coat of oil and into a sealed, fire-proof box.

 

The enemy is moisture, acids (like in your skin oil) and oxygen.

Don't let them sit around. Shoot them.
