U.S. Army Specialist from Elizabeth is killed in Afghanistan

Army Spc. Pedro Millet of Elizabeth was killed by an improvised explosive device in the southern part of Afghanistan Sunday.

 

According to the Department of Defense, the 20-year-old Millet died during a combat operation in the Arghandab River Valley, a long curving arc in the southern region of the war-torn country. Millet was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division based in Fort Carson, Colo.

 

Share Family said they spoke to him by phone on Friday, and he was killed on his third day as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

Millet is at least the 24th service member with ties to New Jersey to die in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001. Nearly 100 others have died in Iraq since the invasion in 2003.

Millet graduated from Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Academy, a campus of Elizabeth High School, in 2008. Millet was an exemplary student who enlisted in the Army to pay for college and a better future, say educators.
