Two more NJ legal questions

A guy I know from Long Island has a Saiga IZ 132 and a RD PSL 54C, both with 10 mag clips. He told me the prices and what ammo costs him, I couldn't believe it! If these guns are legit in NY I would think they are legit here also. He told me the ammo he uses is steel and you HAVE to clean the guns after shooting, other than that, he loves them. Anyone know anything about either of them? He said the Saiga can not be made into a full-auto, he wasn't 100% sure of the RD. He bought both rifles in NY thru an FFL.

Short answer, yes the Saiga is good in NJ. You should take a look in the AK forum here. LOTS of saiga talk over there.

Both are legal in stock form in NJ. The PSL has to have either a welded muzzle brake OR the bayonet lug removed/disabled (they usually come like this no matter what state you are in, though)

 

Steel case has nothing to do with having to clean it after, that only matters if the ammunition is surplus which is usually corrosive in which case you must clean it as he said. Surplus tends to be steel case so that may indeed be what he is talking about...but not all steel case is corrosive (wolf isnt)

 

As far as full auto goes, none can be legally converted. Neither were originally full auto, either

Just a guess, if is legal in NY, then most definite in NJ. NY gun laws are stricter than NJ's, except when dealing with Pre-Bans. NY exempts pre-ban stuff. In NJ, we have no pre-ban. That's were NY has a slight advantage. (Their pistol laws sucks big time)

Thanks! Yes, he told me the ammo he buys is cheap and it's corrosive, thus the need to clean thouroughly after shooting. I plan on making the trek to LI once we have decent enough weather to go fire these myself. I am really digging the cost to purchase and the cost of the ammo. Seems like a good bargain to me. Can buy both these rifles plus a LOT of ammo for less than a lot of the typical AR15's go for. It may not look like the AR's, but a 7.62 x 54 round has to be a blast!

Really only inside NYC, sure everywhere else it's 10 round max mag, but atleast in NY you can get a CC

NY state pistol laws are far worse than NJ - we don't have mandatory handgun registration or need to bring our handguns after purchasing them to the SP station to verify serial numbers.

What do you think a purchase permit is, that's your mandatory handgun registration, it includes the firearms vin number make model caliber and one copy gets sent right to our state police

Yes, you are correct, that is registration. What I was referring to was the fact that in NJ you can inherit handguns, move here with your legally purchased handguns or continue to legally possess handguns bought before registration went into effect without being required to register them.

 

In NY ANY unregistered handgun is illegal, you have to renew your handgun permit every 5 years (or something like that), when you buy a handgun the dealer is not allowed to let you touch it until you have your permit in your hand, and once you do buy it, you have to take it to the state police barracks so they can personally read the serial numbers off of it and add it to you permit. One guy I met who lived on LI was telling me the NYSP barracks was 40 miles from his house, and each purchase required at least two trips there. Sure carrying is a benefit, but it's not universally available in all of NY and prohibited in NYC (where you need it most) even if you have the license.

That is my fault, did not realize that's how it was in New York I knew you couldn't carry in NYC, which your right the place you need it most
