JackDaWack 2,895 Posted June 2, 2011 Ok so I'm in the market for a hand guard as the RRA one current installed weighs a SH8t TON. I've been looking around and have narrowed down my search to something like the DD lite 9.0. The only problem is that the rail can be bought for 300 but then i need the $10 tool, plus i would have to buy the $20+ AR tool will barrel nut wrench. I priced it out to be about 360 shipped to my door, which is just to much money for me to drop on a hand guard, although if my pockets were deep i would be glad too. My question is now, what are some good light 9" FF hand Guards.... My criteria are light and strong... much like every one else's and decently priced. raz-0 1,265 Posted June 2, 2011 I like the troy TRX battlerail/vtac battle rail/rainier arms evolution forearm. It's light, comes with the install wrench. You'll still need an upper receiver block and a vise and a 1/2 drive bar for the tool, but you are going to get stuck with that no matter what. On the upside, it is $165. Assuming you have the wrench, even if you have to buy a tool for the stock nut, $50 for the block, $20 for a barrel nut wrench, you are in $235 for the whole thing. alowerlevel 77 Posted June 2, 2011 Check out the Samson Evo rails http://www.samson-mfg.com/ar-15_html/product/Samson_Evolution_Series.html or the Troy Alpha rails http://troyind.com/%20/battlerails/troy-battlerail-alpha-coming-soon Neither require you to remove the barrel nut, as they both use some form of adaptor/bushing that goes over your stock barrel nut.

Vlad G 345 Posted June 2, 2011 As far as I can tell the Troy/Samson/Vtac(non-JP)/Rainer rails are all the same damn rail made by the same people with different hole patterns. Exact same mounting system and dimensions and very much the same price. I would just pick the one that looks prettier to you.
MidwestPX 172 Posted June 2, 2011 Take a look at the Centurion Arms rails as well. I know Lancer is coming out with a polymer/composite rail that's supposed to be pretty light.
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted June 2, 2011 I need to remove the barrel nut either way to get the RRA FF off. I actually really like the RRA hand guard, but it's 2x the weight of these. I'm looking to end up at around 12oz which incorporates many rail systems but less is better. A few things on the list include a receiver block or the mag block, probably receiver since its way more supporting. DPMS AR tool I'm liking the Samson Evo, i like the modular rails i have a flip sight on my gas block so the troy isn't an option. looks like a good choice, but how is the design in respect to a FF that screws on to the barrel nut and locks using a jam nut? alowerlevel 77 Posted June 2, 2011 Heres a vid of how the Samson rail is intalled
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted June 2, 2011 LOL i was literally just watching that, but this mean i would have to get the barrel nut too, since the one i have is for a free float(threaded w/ jam nut). This looks like to be an upgrade from a non-free float.
alowerlevel 77 Posted June 2, 2011 What RRA upper and handguard do you have?

MidwestPX 172 Posted June 3, 2011 If it's the Surefire one I had on my very first AR, it'll weigh about 22oz if a midlength.
