This happened almost directly accross the street from my shop..

TUCKERTON — A 35-year-old man, reportedly armed with a knife, was shot to death Thursday night by police, who went to a borough home in response to a report of a domestic disturbance.

The two borough police officers who responded to the 911 call to go to 207 Otis Ave. were taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for evaluation following the shooting, according to Deputy Chief Mike Mohel of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The girlfriend of the shooting victim, Melissa Cranmer — who had made the 911 call — was taken by ambulance to a hospital following the shooting, according to friend Kathy Deschamps.

“We heard six shots,” Deschamps said at the scene. “Melissa ran outside when she heard the shots, and she collapsed.”

Deschamps said Cranmer came to her home at Marine Street and Otis Avenue to call police to her home. She said Cranmer is a divorced mother of three children.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Mohel said. Police got the call about 8:25 p.m., he said.

“A female dialed 911 to the Tuckerton Police Department and two officers responded to a domestic dispute,” Mohel said. “Preliminary investigation indicates so far that the officers were threatened by the man with some type of weapon. He was shot and killed.”

Residents who knew the victim said he had a knife when police arrived at 207 Otis Ave.

“My cousin’s boyfriend got shot,” said Subrina Bozarth of Great Bay Boulevard, Cranmer’s cousin and Deschamps’ daughter.

Bozarth said her cousin, Cranmer, came to her mother’s house nearby because she wanted to call police, Deschamps said.

Cramner’s children went went to stay with Cranmer’s mother, who lives nearby. But Cranmer’s ex-husband’s mother later came to take the children after the shooting.

“She came over to my mother’s house (to call police) to get him removed,” said Bozarth.

“When they (police) came to her house, I guess he had a knife,” she said.

Great Bay Emergency Medical Services, local police and the Tuckerton Fire Company were at the scene. Police blocked off Otis Avenue at Marine Street while the investigation continued.

Mohel declined to say how many shots were fired.

“The investigation is continuing,” he said.

Mohel said he was withholding the name of the victim until all next of kin had been notified. He said an autopsy would be performed Friday.

I see the chief of police is at the scene in the video which means he had to come into work, also had to call in more patrolman if the two officers at the scene were sent to community we only have two officers on duty at night in town.. small town which also gets backed up by LEH.

Was there any more detail than "shot man with a knife" ?

Did he brandish it? Lunge at them? Suicide by cop? Was it a kitchen knife, a bowie knife, a 2 inch pocket knife...it'd be nice to have some more detail.

You'll never know the answers to these questions.

You'll never know the answers to these questions.

That's not always true. Maybe in this case, but I've heard the news hyperventilate statements like this before: "It was at that time that he lunged at the police with a 12 inch butcher knife"

TUCKERTON — A borough man shot and killed by a police Thursday night was brandishing a meat cleaver-type of knife when two officers discharged their weapons, according to authorities.

Steven Theoharides, 35, a man who served nine years in prison for assaulting and eluding police in 2000, was shot to death by borough Police Officers Brian T. Olsen and Justin M. Cherry while armed with a 4-inch by 6-inch knife, after they arrived at his Otis Avenue residence in response to an 8:25 p.m. 911 call reporting a domestic dispute at the house, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.

“During the encounter, both police officers apparently discharged their weapons, striking the deceased,” Ford said. “It appears at this time that Mr. Theoharides died as a result of gun shot wounds inflicted during that encounter.”

Olsen, a 10-year veteran officer, and Cherry, a 6-year veteran officer, have been placed on administrative duty pending the results of an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office and by the state Attorney General’s Office, Ford said.

“Whether or not the use of deadly force by police in this circumstance, based upon self defense or any other legal justification, was appropriate will be the subject of an exhaustive review,” Ford added.

“The fact that the officers involved in this shooting have been placed on administrative duty should not be interpreted as suggesting any finding by this office of whether or not the use of deadly force was appropriate. Obviously, we are in the early stages of this investigation, and it would be grossly premature to make any such judgments. We will need to complete an objective and complete investigation before such a determination is made,” Ford said.

“The officers directly involved in the shooting will not be authorized to return to full active duty until our investigation is completed and I authorize the return of those officers to full active duty,” Ford added.

An autopsy by Dr. Ian Hood of the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled for today as investigators continue to piece together the details of the fatal incident, according to Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Prosecutor’s Office.

On Thursday night, Olsen and Cherry were responding to a 911 call from Theoharides’ alleged victim, identified as his live-in girlfriend, Melissa Cranmer by her friend and neighbor Kathy Deschamps, reporting a domestic dispute at their shared residence at 207 Otis Ave., Deschamps explained Thursday night following the incident.

Deschamps said Cranmer came to her home at Marine Street and Otis Avenue to call police and they heard six shots at the scene after the officers arrived.

“We heard six shots,” Deschamps said. “Melissa ran outside when she heard the shots, and she collapsed.”

Cranmer, a divorced mother of three children, was taken by ambulance to a hospital following the shooting, Deschamps said.

The officers and victim were all transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford, where they were evaluated, treated and released following the shooting, Mohel said.

This is not the first run-in with police for Theoharides. In 2000, he was convicted and jailed in Middlesex County for aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, eluding arrest while operating a motor vehicle, creating a risk to others and eluding a police officer in a motor vehicle.

He served 9 years and 18 days in New Jersey State Prison in Trenton before he was released on July 28, 2009, according to prison records.

The investigation is ongoing, Mohel said.

The investigation is being headed by Detectives Carlos Trujillo-Tovar and Casey Long. Anyone with information about this event is encouraged to contact the detectives at the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, 732-929-2027.
