Cherry Ridge And Skeet/clay

Recommended Posts

I have been a member there for a few years, but don't know how the shotgun range works. I'd like to shoot some clays there. I know I have to bring my own launcher. Questions:

Is there such thing as a cheap launcher that I can throw clays to myself?

Is it a p.i.t.a to mount to the table?

Is one of those NEF/Pardner pumps I see at dicks on sale suitable for such an endeavor? I dont have any intentions of hunting anything ever so this would just be for clays.

Do you have to clean up after your clays when you are done?

Is the shotgun range ever 'crowded'?

Thanks for any input.

It's do-able, but can be somewhat awkward.

Some inexpensive throwers:

A couple of us have electric throwers:

A bit more money, but not too bad if you get it from Natchezss (shipping is about $50, so with the rebate, it's pretty much a wash)

Is it a p.i.t.a to mount to the table?

With the exception of the step thrower and electric thrower linked above, I usually see people use a couple big C-clamps to mount the thrower to the table

The longer barreled one (I think it's 26"?) would do fine for your intended purposes

Not the busted clays - just your empty shells

Is the shotgun range ever 'crowded'?

It's usually not crowded (unless a group of us from the forum are there, which hasn't happened in a while)

The trius name used to be good in traps but since they were bought out by a conglomerate their quality went to China if you know what I mean. So, if you can find an older Trius (they were dark green) on ebay or Craigslist (where I found mine), honestly, you should not spend more than $25 or $30 on any of those, especially if they are used.

A step on trap is nice as the mechanism is easier to reset and then release. The table top traps are nicer than the hand throwers though some guys like the hand throwers and can get decent results with them.

The electrics are "the shyt".

Buy clays at Cherry Ridge, a) they don't mark them up, they're cheaper than you can get them anywhere, b) they are biodegradable (required though I've seen people use non-biodegradable ones).

You don't have to clean up your clay bits when you are done but you do have to clean up your spent shotgun shells.

Dicks usually has fairly good prices on shotgun shells by the case though that may be more toward the spring season rather than now.

Appreciate the responses. Trying to convice "santa" I need an electric thrower now.

I bought one. It's great. I also have a do-all thrower that I paid $29+tax at Gander mountain. It works but it's easy to hit off of. If you are starting out it's a good start but you end up outgrowing it. I mounted it on a board for use at Cherry Ridge. $20 if you want it.
