Maps for Compass Navigation

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to try going some old fassioned navigation using a compass. Does anyone know the best type of map to purchase for this type of navigation? I would like to get a state map and local area maps but I am not sure if you can navigate using such large maps. Any help would be appreciated.

Get your hands on a topographical map. Most camping stores have them, and they will give you the difference between true and magnetic north. While you're there, grab a Boy Scout Handbook, it has some great info in it regarding Orienteering(in addition to a ton of other outdoor skills).

I have a copy of MapTech and from it you can plot USGS 7-1/2 minute quad maps from it. I can't remember if fills a blank DVD or CD.

Agreed with the Topo Map. I believe the Ranger Station at Batso and/or Atsion sells them or you can get them online.

You can download or buy maps direct from USGS. Downloads are free IIRC.
