Another upper thread...

Recommended Posts

The timing on this other thread works out well for me, but I didn't want to hijack it so I started this one. I just picked up a New Frontier complete lower from PK90 (thanks Paul!) and am still waffling over an upper to install.

My goal for this AR is very low cost plinking. It will likely see a lot of time with .22lr courtesy of a Brownell's conversion kit I've had for a year but never used.

So I'm looking for a low cost complete upper (and am not against building one either). I also am still considering a dedicated .22lr upper instead, since opinions on the accuracy and reliability of .22lr conversion kits seem to be all over the map. A dedicated, complete .22lr AR like the S&W 15-22 is at this time off the table. Carbine or mid-length.

Additional info. I already have a very nice, accurate 5.56 AR (LMT) and am in line for one of the 3rd run of the NJGF custom lowers. That one will eventually turn into a high(er) end custom build, but would not be complete for a year or so after the lower arrives, and I've not decided on the caliber.

Therefore I turn to the collective wisdom and sage advice of the NJGunforum community and ask that you weigh in from the perspective of "what would you do?" Thank you.

Hey Andy B...We are in the same spot. I have a couple of real nice lowers that i got from Bullseye in Woodbridge. At this point they are not yet built but i am already going thru the same process you are...build, buy, or a little of each. I too have been reading the thread that you linked in here. It will be interesting to see where this thread goes...thanks for asking.

Andy:

I really like this one (Post #164)

Just another direction to consider - figure you're halfway there with the Frontier lower.

Adios,

Bob,

That's pretty nice. But a carbon fiber hand guard can't be cheap. Chiappa makes a.22lr poly upper, but the few reviews I've seen are lukewarm.

The Clark tube is like 60 bucks, but involves glue.

The ap custom handguard is like $125. Very nice, I have two.

The 1:12 upper would be a great compromise solution. However, on a whim, I made what I thought was a way too-low bid on a Tactical Solutions AR-22 upper... and won. So I am going the dedicated .22lr route this time. I've heard a lot of good things about this upper and it is apparently as "mil-spec" as a .22lr upper can be so if I want to tart it up I can. Good luck on your quest Sharrie*1!

I'll try to get a range report on this combo once I actually get to the range with it!

So I got a New Frontier Armory lower a couple weeks ago. For the most part, I'm happy with it. What I am unhappy about are the seam lines, and what looks like chatter marks on the sides of the receiver. Is it fine to use sand paper to clean up these marks and seams, or is it not suggested?

I'm new the AR15 world. All I have today is my M&P15T (Heavy Crowned Barrel + HEAVY Quad Rail) and I wanted to try something newer, more versatile, and most importantly, larger feature set. In MA, where I came from, we are not allowed comps of any kind.

I was hemming and hawing about whether to buy new, used when I got some good advice - get a new upper. So I did. I went with a Bravo Company Standard 14.5 Midlength Upper Receiver Set with a Troy Alpha 11" Rail (LINK: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-14-5-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-VTAC-ALPHA-p/bcm-urg-mid-14%20vtactrx11.htm) with a black Battle Comp 1.5.

I also added a BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 Medium charging handle. The plan is to mate this upper set with my current BCG and Lower, add in my MBUS sights, Angle Foregrip, ACOG, and get the RMR setup offset. I think this will be a cool build that I'll likely frankenstein as I learn more about what I like and don't like.

Anyone have thoughts on the components and setup? I'm very open to wisdom from the group.

      Cheers,
      James

    • For clarification, New Jersey is a state that there is a duty to inform Law enforcement when stopped, correct?

He was lodged in Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
    • Having worked in restaurants for over 15 years, this would probably equate to 55/60k. I've never met anyone in hospitality that only works a 40 hour work week.  It's still like this. I get offered jobs all the time from places looking for Chefs. I was getting paid 65k during the pandemic as  the Chef de Cuisine of a top restaurant. The other day I was at a meeting at a hotel in NY. They are paying close to 29 an hour for cooks. At 50 hours, which is a light week for a cook, they're making about 95k.
    • Every time I read USCCA magazine, I think of this thread.  They have a wonderful women's section that generally has an article with photos showing women with concealed handguns in various outfits.
