Anyone ever do a 7.62x39 Upper?

Recommended Posts

I have been looking into this kind of upper and just curious what others think. M1S seems to have pretty good reviews and I definitely like the price:

I know the bolt has to be different (well, the extractor or ejector, I always confuse them) and I bought one a while back from midway on a whim (so that's not an issue at the moment), but I think I would want the low profile gas block instead of the stupid FSB (even though M1S does shave down the bayo lug).

Does anyone have an opinion about the target crown for this 20" barrel? It seems like that's fine for NJ and I wouldn't have to worry about getting a MB pinned/welded, but just wondering about the pros/cons since I'm used to my 16" 556 upper with the MB.

I have a lot more 762x39 than I do 223/556, so figured why not? :D

I don't know much about 300 Blackout, but it doesn't look like I can find any ammo in stock. :( I have like 10x the amount of 762x39 than I do 223/556 so that's why I was interested initially. Do you have the 300 blackout upper from M1S?

Colt used to make a 7.62x39 upper many years ago. The upper ran well but mags were somewhat problematic.

As I recall, there were several 'bandaid' type fixes for the mags, including building hybrid AK/AR mags.

If I were to consider one these days, I think think I'd have to go with the RRA version.

I don't have any personal experience with it, however, I have heard they run.

No I build it up from scratch:

16" 1:8 Daniel Defense barrel

12" YHM float tube

YHM comp

JP stripped upper

JP bolt carrier group (backorder)

Have a Colt MT6851DC upper (7.62 x 39), a 20 inch heavy barrel crowned muzzle with a rifle gas system and A2 front site. Works fine. Go for it if you want one. Need barrel and bolt to make it work. Magazine problem related to taper of shell. Required greater bend of magazine body to compensate cases. This caused feed issues. Smaller mags work great (Five or seven rounds).

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
