Got a nice surprise today

Recommended Posts

So the phone rings and my wife picks it up. I hear "oh, hi...how are you? Yes, he's here, hold on". Then "Hi, remember when you asked to be put on the list for a 9MM Shield? Well, today is your day. One just came in and you're at the top of the list".

Needless to say, I was in the truck and on my way as fast as an old fart can. So, I finally got my Shield. Of course it'll probably be a couple of months until I get to bring it home.

That is a nice surprise. Have you shot the shield yet? I'm still on the fence between that and a subcompact. I've held the shield and the grip just seems so narrow and thin that I'm not sure what it'd shoot like, but everyone that has a shield raves about it. I am guessing you picked it up from Bob's given your location and Home Range info?

What does Bob's offer for rentals? I haven't been there since I bought my XD9 from them almost 3 yrs ago, but I'd like it if they offered some of the handguns I'm contemplating and also to have my wife shoot a couple different models to get a feel for what she likes.

Yep! It was Bob's. I honestly don't know what they have for rentals. I have had a chance to shoot a Shield and I liked it a lot. At the same time, his buddy offered to let me shoot his Nano which I also liked. The Shield was my first choice but they couldn't be found. Since the Nano was so close and I've always wanted a Beretta, I bought one. I really like it but that Shield just stuck with me so when I had the chance, I jumped on it. Funny thing is... on the day I shot the Nano and Shield, I had my S&W 5906TSW. They asked what I was shooting so I returned the favor and let each of 'em shoot the 5906. When I saw 'em later in the store, they both told me they had to find a 5906. Works both ways, I guess.

Is the M&P anything like the 5906? My dad has a 3906 and I hate the thing...

No. The 5906 is a very heavy gun, all stainless steel. As such, the recoil is nothing. Every time I clean it, I admire the way it's built. I believe these (the 'TSW' versions) were built for LE. I know when I bought it used, it was an ex LE gun. I love shooting this one.

If you're ever planning a range trip to bobs send me a pm if you wouldn't mind me shooting a few rds through it? (I of course will supply my own ammo). I'd really like to shoot one before I decide to plunk down $400+

Which one? I assume you mean the Shield. I'd be glad to let you shoot the Shield, Nano, or 5906. Still need my permit for the Shield. It's paid for but not 'mine' yet.

    • If you’re going to VA, buy 2 radios.  Program one for here and one for there.  If you guys are buying Baofeng radios do yourself a favor and get a tactical antenna for it,it’ll extend your reach.
    • Both our memories are a bit lacking. 3 bystanders were hit by NYPD bullets and 6 were hit by fragments at the Empire State Building shooting. The bullets later were determined to have passed through the bad guy as I said. He was not a big guy. The police fired 16 rds and 7 hit the bad guy.  Spray and pray?  I think not.  These officers fired until the threat was stopped and everyone is moving. Have you ever tried to hit a moving target whilst you're moving.  If you watch the video from where the police encounter him, the BG draws his gun from his bag, NYPD guys shoot, and the BG hit the ground is about 2 or 3 seconds.  The closest officer is maybe 12 feet or less.  The closest cover are those concrete flower pots.  If the officers chose to take cover before drawing the BG would have had a chance to shoot at least one officer. Know your target and beyond?  Agree 100%.  However, this by the Empire State Building at 9 am during the week.  There are bystanders and traffic in every direction.  The officers had a choice of doing what they did or letting the BG shoot them with his 1911 and shoot someone else. I think they made the right choice and the same one I would have made.  The officers exercised the best option in protecting themselves and the public. The first video is the police shooting.  The second is more detailed and gives you a lot of background information on the shooter. One thing this shows is if NYPD had to use fmj undoubtedly more bystanders would have been wounded perhaps killed.  NJ's hollowpoint law. only creates more danger to the public.
