Whiskey Reb 0 Posted December 14, 2013 Hi All, I just got my new Mossberg 500, and I see there are some black grease smudges on the wood stock. I am not sure if I did this while messing around with the action or if it came that way. In any case I tried soap and water, and then an anti-grease spray cleaner and still no joy. Any suggestions? Thanks, WR
Scrap 4 Posted December 14, 2013 Pictures would surely help, this way the braintrust here could get an idea of exactly what you're dealing with. Maybe some saddle soap ?

Whiskey Reb 0 Posted December 14, 2013 It will still shoot the same and gives it a little character. Its gonna get beat up anyway. lol, yeah part of me was thinking the same thing. Like after the first scratch on the new car your like "oh well - no more obsessing"
NickySantoro 211 Posted December 15, 2013 OP, Try some mineral spirits. If that won't take it off then it's not gun grease.
FLHX 1 Posted December 15, 2013 When you wrote about the scratch that brought me back to my first nice car 1985 Camaro. I parked it away from everyone and babied it. I had to drive up to rt 22 and I had a small accident and got a little scratch. I got home compounded the scratches out and from then on I no longer parked it out of the way. That memory hit me after reading your post!!
Whiskey Reb 0 Posted December 15, 2013 OP, Try some mineral spirits. If that won't take it off then it's not gun grease. Thanks - just tried it and perhaps helped 10%. Maybe its not grease. Oh well I am going with the "gives it character" philosophy!

Could it be silicone grease? You might want to try some ammonia. That might help and still not damage the stock.

Dirt diver 0 Posted December 25, 2013 Try an eraser looks like a but from another gun scraped it.. Yes, try a mr clean magic eraser. If that doesn't work try krud cutter but dab it on a rag and just rub the mark
Whiskey Reb 0 Posted December 26, 2013 Thanks guys, I'll give the suggestions a try. I know its just a cosmetic issue but now I just see it as a challenge. (will be happy to shoot it no matter what!)
High Exposure 5,667 Posted December 26, 2013 Tie it to your bumper and drag it behind your car. You will never notice that smudge again Remember, with firearms it's like your Mom told you, it is what's on the inside that counts. As long as it goes bang and hits what you are aiming at, it's all good.

NickySantoro 211 Posted December 27, 2013 Try an eraser looks like a but from another gun scraped it.. Agreed. After seeing the pics an eraser might work well. Another site suggested rubbing the scuff with a tennis ball.
