P2P problems with NJ township. Need assistance!

Recommended Posts

Update:  So After calling some lawyers, calling the chief of police, and generally getting completely flustered, I decided to simply call the detective and ask him what happened with my references.

The detective was very helpful, and helped me realize that reference #1's number had been disconnected. Sure enough, my buddy confirmed that his company changed his cell phone just a week or two ago.

The detective told me that he left a message with Reference #2, and he never called him back. Ref#2 told me that's B.S. etc. ,etc.

Guess what, I goofed and made a typo on his phone number in the original application.

The detectvie simply needed me to come back in and provide him with a new form (just the 1 page) with good phone numbers. Within 30 minutes of calling him, I showed-up with the updated form. The detective told me he'd call the next day between x and x hours.

Sure enough, the very next day, both my buddies confirmed the call within minutes of each other.

I screwed up, and due to paranoia, ASSumptions, and some poor advise, I automatically placed the blame on my PD. I was literally on the phone with lawyers, prepared to goto legal war, all because of a typo and bad circumstance.

So in the end, the lesson is don't be paranoid, and don't assume the worst that every cop is out to get you.

Absolutely. 100% agree.

This is exactly what I was saying to myself as I drove to the station.

NJSP here needs stamped envelopes and they mail them to your references.

Reference check for my original FID address change, and my last P2P were mailed.

Since the new digital, online background check, it looks like my town has switched to phone calls.

Speeds-up the process somewhat.

I never have these problems with references. The two that I always use both work at the same police department in my town. I asked one of them once if they actually got the letter in the mail or a phone call. He said "nope the detective that handles that yelled across the room to me if I knew you, I told him yes, he asked if i was ok and I told him yes... permits issued". Last time I applied it was 17 days from paperwork drop off to phone call "come get your permits". Moral of the story, make friends with the police in your town. Makes life easier.

I'm still a little troubled by this post. Why did the police tell you to "reapply" when he was having trouble reaching your references? Why can he pick up the phone and call your references, but he can't call you and let you know he is having problems calling your refs? And then tell you to re-apply? That's terrible advice! While I am happy it all worked out well, a little communications ON BOTH ENDS would work wonders.

    • If you’re going to VA, buy 2 radios.  Program one for here and one for there.  If you guys are buying Baofeng radios do yourself a favor and get a tactical antenna for it,it’ll extend your reach.
    • Both our memories are a bit lacking. 3 bystanders were hit by NYPD bullets and 6 were hit by fragments at the Empire State Building shooting. The bullets later were determined to have passed through the bad guy as I said. He was not a big guy. The police fired 16 rds and 7 hit the bad guy.  Spray and pray?  I think not.  These officers fired until the threat was stopped and everyone is moving. Have you ever tried to hit a moving target whilst you're moving.  If you watch the video from where the police encounter him, the BG draws his gun from his bag, NYPD guys shoot, and the BG hit the ground is about 2 or 3 seconds.  The closest officer is maybe 12 feet or less.  The closest cover are those concrete flower pots.  If the officers chose to take cover before drawing the BG would have had a chance to shoot at least one officer. Know your target and beyond?  Agree 100%.  However, this by the Empire State Building at 9 am during the week.  There are bystanders and traffic in every direction.  The officers had a choice of doing what they did or letting the BG shoot them with his 1911 and shoot someone else. I think they made the right choice and the same one I would have made.  The officers exercised the best option in protecting themselves and the public. The first video is the police shooting.  The second is more detailed and gives you a lot of background information on the shooter. One thing this shows is if NYPD had to use fmj undoubtedly more bystanders would have been wounded perhaps killed.  NJ's hollowpoint law. only creates more danger to the public.
