sroc112 24 Posted June 30, 2017 In other surrounding states that don't have the same tight restrictions on assault rifles like NJ does, are you able to own a rifle with say and 8.1 or 11.5 inch barrel? Or would you be required to have some sort on suppressor on it to still make it a certain total length?
High Exposure 5,664 Posted June 30, 2017 In most states SBRs (any rifle with a barrel less than 16" - this includes 14.5" barrels with 1.5" muzzle break that have NOT been permanently attached as per federal guidelines) You would have to file paperwork (I think it is a Form 4) with the ATF for a SBR ($200 tax stamp) and the lower would have to be engraved as such. Takes a few months to get the paper work back and then you are good to go. Also, If you plan on taking the SBR across state lines, you need to file paperwork with the ATF for permission. This will not fly in NJ. State law strictly forbids SBR even if your form is approved by the ATF.
Buns of Guns 7 Posted June 30, 2017 Yes, believe it or not Federal gun laws still exist outside of NJ. NFA, GCA...922® compliance etc.Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk

High Exposure 5,664 Posted June 30, 2017 I haven't heard it's difficult per se. You just need patience.

It's easy, there are YouTube videos on doing it and in some cases the dealer will do it for you and you sign it. I have 9 SBR's, 4 suppressors and just applied for a SBS. It isn't hard at all but the 200 / application adds up once you start. https://www.atfonline.gov/EForms/faces/userProfile/login.jspx?_afrLoop=130226780983196325&_afrWindowMode=0&_adf.ctrl-state=d0a09gzp_4 sign up for an account and process your form 4 here. You'll be able to track status and get your tax stamp back electronically in a PDF that's locked for editing.
