openroadws 1 Posted April 6, 2009 I posted this in a different forum but I am hoping someone can help. I'm used to loading 2.8 Gr. bullseye with 148 Gr. HBWC for 38 SPL. Just got a good price for 148 GR DEWC. My question is can I stay with 2.8 GR, or should I work up a new load? Any advice would be appreciated!
tbtrout 141 Posted April 6, 2009 HBWC seat flush with the case. Some people crimp DEWC in the top crimp groove, I seat them flush with good results. As long as your load is not at the max loading I would try the same load. You may find that you need to adjust charges because the bullets are different. HBWC are designed to seal the barrel as they shoot. Good luck
openroadws 1 Posted April 6, 2009 I'll take your advice and seat flush, as you said, like the HBWC. I just wonder since the bullet is not sealing as it is in the HBWC if I will have to work the load up. Will start at the 2.8 gr. and see. Thanks for getting back to me
tbtrout 141 Posted April 11, 2009 Have you had a chance to try out the load yet?
openroadws 1 Posted April 12, 2009 Have you had a chance to try out the load yet? Yes, I tried it this week. I only reloaded 2.8 Gr and it felt perfect. I think it was a slight bit hotter, kind of snappier if you know what I mean. But it was really accurate and it felt good. Was shooting it in a
tbtrout 141 Posted April 12, 2009 Glad it worked out for you. I love my 686. Is yours a 4 or 6"?
openroadws 1 Posted April 12, 2009 I love my 686 too. My gun is a 6", How about yours? I put a pair of Ahrends grips on. They look really good, but I can't say they feel any better than the stock grips.
tbtrout 141 Posted April 12, 2009 Mine is a 6" as well. I really like the stock wood grips. Have you tried Trail Boss yet for loading lead? It is an awsome powder.

Funny you should ask that.To answer your question, no I haven"t tried Trail Boss. I"ve been reloading for quite a few years and have gotten kind of stuck in a Bullseye powder funk. I have been thinking of trying some different powders. It might be fun to work up some new loads with new powders. Have been thinking Clays, but now will look into Trail Boss too. What do you really like about it?
tbtrout 141 Posted April 13, 2009 Trail Boss is a bulky powder, no chance of doublecharges. It was designed for Cowboy Action and lead bullets. Extremely acurate with very little recoil. I use it for 38/357, 44mag, 45acp and 45-70 light target loads.
tony357 386 Posted April 14, 2009 I also have a 686 6 in. I may try the trail boss also, I have still been using red dot in my target loads for the 38 spl rnds.
tbtrout 141 Posted April 15, 2009 You will like Trail Boss. Next time I go to Brick Armory I will post it and if you two want to try a few loads come on over. It is a blast to use in 45 acp.
