JohnnyB 4,325 Posted September 4, 2020 I have a Springfield 1903-A3 that my grandfather got in Cosmoline in the 1950s. The serial # is 249,000 range and I was told I could never fire it because it may blow up. As far as I can tell, it's never been fired!

Sounds like your serial # is off.

It is an early receiver not recommended for firing. Stock is one of the nicest I have seen in person.

CAL. .30 M1 2,101 Posted September 5, 2020 In so much as i recall....would have to check Hatcher and Brophy.....i *think* it was like 790 to 800 k serial for SA guns...that was the diff between the correct heat treatment... That being said.... ya know...a cast bullet with 16grains of 2400 is soft shooting and not crazy pressure...i would shoot the ole girl with that load. Hatcher had a whole 'analysis' of the number that failed...etc... 1
