  1. Split the difference. Easier to handle and more comfortable to shoot that a .44, much more power than a .357 for when you need it = .41 Remington Magnum. Not easy to find, but a 41 in an S&W Mountain gun, or their Scandium framed models have always been on my list. Wish they would make an L-frame in that caliber.
  2. Well, the idea is that you don't have the luxury of knowing how much time you have. As a barely average shooter myself, from a ready position, I would say that at least 3 hits should be made in that 3 seconds.
  3. That's the key, there is no set range. To start, I would say that anything between touching distance out to around 25 yards would be good. Anything further, while it doesn't hurt to practice, would also mean that you should be thinking about other options rather than just shooting (handgun). Now, if you are drilling the X on every shot at all of those distances, it doesn't mean that your a great shot; it means that your are shooting too slow.
  4. Target shooting means you squeeze the trigger when you have a clear sight picture. Combat shooting means you press the trigger when you have an acceptable sight picture. Of course, in some cases, sights are optional.
  5. Lesniak is in debt to the HSUS for their endorsement in his failed governor's bid. Humane Society of the US, although it sounds like the Humane Society, is really a PETA-like group that wants nothing more than to end all hunting, zoos, pet ownership, livestock farming, etc.. Make no mistake, NJ hunting organizations have and will continue to fight these politicians for a very long time. For example, Murphy vows to end the bear hunt as soon as he is in office; despite the Fish and Game council's decision to include it as part of their comprehensive, long-term bear management plan. A plan developed by biologists. The HSUS plan includes bear-proof garbage cans and surgical spaying. Sounds cheap? Like it or not, hunting is an integral part of conservation. Even trophy hunting has its place, despite the bad rap that its gotten over Cecil being shot. It is not perfect. Ex. A cattle rancher in Africa has several game animals on his property. These animals are competing with his cattle for food/water. If not for a trophy hunter coming in and paying to shoot these animals, they have no other worth to the rancher. His only recourse is to kill these animals himself to leave more for his cattle. Same goes for lions/leopards/hippos/elephants/etc. on his property. If the rancher knows that he can get $50K for the lion that occasionally kills one of his cows, he is willing to make that trade-off. Not so much if he can't.
  6. Best youtube videos? Mat Best
  7. One last thing, while I am a huge fan of Memphis BBQ and prefer it overall to any of the rest; the single best BBQ I've ever had was at Aaron Franklin's place in Austin. Luckily, he has all of his recipes and step-by-step cooking instructions on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/BBQwithFranklin/videos
  8. Most purists will tell you that you'd get a better smoke and texture using only wood. Reality is that you'll get very good results by using pellets in an electric smoker, and undoubtedly more consistent than using a wood smoker. It'll be plenty to cut your teeth on and you can find out what your likes/dislikes are. Keep in mind. Don't oversmoke. Start with a mellow wood at first. Pork butt is probably the easiest to start with and get great results.
  9. You'd be had pressed to find a "good" TV that isn't Smart/WiFi capable. You can either not join it to your home network, or block it from joining on your router. Better yet, go into advanced network settings on the TV and disable "auto" for IP address discovery and give it a made-up address such as 1.1.1.1.
  10. When I lived there not so long ago, I would see at least several eagles every year. Funny how the lady in the article is calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime event".
  11. Unloaded mags. Check with the individual airline for requirements for ammo. If United, it's OK to keep it in the same case as the gun, but it has to be in a box of some sort.
  12. WMA ranges are great, safe places to plink with your .22. EXCEPT during the months of Oct., Nov., and Dec., at which time, they become havens of self-proclaimed experts, garbage dumpers and professional hunters. On more than one occasion, I've had to try and convince shooters that adjusting your scope during a cease fire IS considered handling a firearm.
  13. Agreed. I think new legislation will allow the ATF more leniency in categorizing what constitutes full auto. In the case of "bump-fire" stocks, its pretty clear that the spirit of the NFA is circumvented. And yes, I do realize that the same effect can be had with a rubber-band/sling/dowel/etc.; however, it was only a matter of time until inventors came up with easily-purchased attachments that would be more reliable/faster/etc..
  14. If your looking for a proper fitting, then this is the place you need to go.
  15. Coated bullets are not made for OCD reloaders. It is very common to see variances such as the ones you have. As long as you're not on the ragged-edge of overpressure, it should be fine. I don't think you'll see any real benefit in going to the semi-wadcutter seating stem, as I often see a slight sprue or coating drip on the flat of coated bullets anyway (that could also account for your bullet length vs. seating depth inconsistency). For best consistency, you'd be better-off with quality JHP's.
  16. I Hate, Hate, Hate Mayweather. Hate the way he runs his mouth. Hate his fighting style. Hate his attitude. Nothing would make me happier than to see him KO'ed. Now, I've been wishing for that to happen since the late nineties; much to my dismay. Unfortunately, Mayweather has the whole boxing thing figured-out. I say that it will be an incredibly boring fight for the first 6 rounds or so. McGregor is going to get frustrated and tired of chasing Floyd around the ring and eating jabs, so he'll try to "make something happen". At that point he'll be KO'ed and Floyd won't even need to wear sunglasses tomorrow.
  17. My rifle routinely shoots just under 1" groups at 100 yards, of course that requires no wind, no coffee and only with Eley Match ammo (black box). It did take quite a while to find the ammo that worked best in the rifle, and I must have tried at least 20 different loadings. I would be lying if I said that Tenex didn't shoot better than all the others, but the price tag was just too much for .25" better groups. Check out the link here for an ammo test done a few years ago, it might give you a better perspective on expectations: http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8711043/m/9871088921 FWIW - CCI Green Tag did not work very well for me at all.
  18. Good quality parts. You can go on their website and get slide/frame finished with many options and degrees of completeness. The Damascus slides are killer too. As others have said, expect to pay at least 2K+, unless your gunsmith works for free.
  19. Funny debate. We have a cartridge that falls squarely in between a 9mm and .45 ACP in diameter, common bullet weight, and typical velocity. -and yet- The 9mm and 45 ACP are beyond reproach, while the 40 S&W is a pig.
  20. Buy a reloading manual. Hornady and Lee are both good ones to start with. Nosler, Sierra and Lyman are also very good. Use it as a reference guide for correct procedure in addition to the load data within. Also, Youtube is your friend. If I were you, I would start with a single stage "kit" from and get comfortable with it first.
  21. I have a Gunbox 2.0 and it has both RFiD and biometric readers; so I can only speak about it. RFid chips for it come in several forms, including key fob, sticker, ring, wrist band and key card. You just choose whichever is most convenient for you. The Gunbox does not look anything like a pistol safe, so I would have no problem leaving a fob or card in the same general area without worry that someone would "figure it out". Lastly, the chip reader is just a backup to the fingerprint reader, although it has been generally pretty reliable so far. I realize that it is not a gun safe per se, but only a gun box; meant to keep little hands away and make it slightly more difficult to gain unwanted access to a loaded firearm. With that, it also has a few little features that make it more convenient to that end. It will "alarm" if someone tries to move it, and keep beeping until the battery dies (at least several hours) or someone enters a correct fingerprint/chip, and it will also log attempts to access it; so that I can see if anyone tampers with it while I'm not around.
  22. P Perfectly normal and will not cause any issues.
  23. I used mid-state pool liners to replace mine. They do quite a bit of liners every year, and I was happy with their work. Start to finish took them approx. 5 hours, and they save your pool water, so you can use it the same day.
