  1. Congratulations! Please let him know how much we appreciate his service.
  2. Gah both my grandfathers were engineers in the navy and were never issued pistols. You lucky duck. I don't have anything productive to add other than congratulations.
  3. Bladetech has holsters that will work for you no worries there. Fear not the double-action shot! I shoot a Sig DA/SA and like it quite a bit. Practice (UNLOADED NO ONE AROUND YOU) drawing your pistol and pressing out while maintaining a good sight picture. Once you get better you can start applying pressure to the trigger before you're arms are completely out. Honestly if you can't shoot your pistol accurately in any of its functions you ought to practice more or find a new gun. As someone mentioned above you won't even realize it was DA when the buzzer goes off. Lastly, when you go to your first match you will see lots of people who are much more experienced than yourself, shooting very quickly. TAKE YOUR EFFING TIME. They've done this before probably many times, if you try to match their speed you will be very inaccurate and much more importantly very unsafe. Practice making good hits and speed will come with experience. You are not at a level yet to be "pushing yourself" to get a better time, focus on drawing, moving, engaging, reloading, and re-holstering safely. Also while I'm talking about it TAKE YOUR EFFING TIME. Yes it's that important. With that said, good luck! You'll come to really love competitive shooting, it's horribly addicting.
  4. Gun is unloaded, sitting next to a loaded mag in a quick-open safe next to my bed. Commuting to college from home, parents rules. I've practiced a bit in the dark to see if I could get to it with any sense of expediency. Takes me about 4.5 seconds to unlock it, and chamber a round. While not perfect, it's the best option I have at the moment.
  5. Simple enough that I'm surprised we haven't seen something like this already. Looks worthy of some field-testing.
  6. While I understand that an absurd amount of tweaking, tuning, fine-tuning, and money goes into being a bench-rest shooter... it still seems silly.
  7. Also for any of you wealthy not-yet-fathers who have the inkling to spoil someone, I am putting myself up for adoption. 23, well groomed, house-broken (mostly), trying my darndest to earn good grades. Please PM me with offers.
  8. There are quite a few words that all basically describe whether or not the original factory mechanical tolerances have been greatly exceeded due to excessive use, poor handling, amateur gunsmithing. Timing usually means that the cylinder should be locked in place in direct & complete alignment from chamber to forcing cone at the point where either the hammer comes to full cock or it begins to fall as the trigger is pulled. Timing is considered "off" if the cylinder will rotate in either direction after the hammer is cocked. (Putting it simplistically.)Typically, and there's no range rod needed, bad timing can be determined by cocking the hammer very slowly and then checking to see if the cylinder's locked. If it will still rotate a bit further by hand before the bolt (or cylinder latch in Rugerland) drops into the cylinder's locking notch, timing is off. The cylinder SHOULD lock up before you hear the final click of the hammer cocking. If you see off-center firing pin strikes on primers, that can be another indicator.
  9. My girlfriend's father once passed me a note on a napkin during dinner that said "I've got a shotgun, a shovel, and 3 acres behind the house... no one will find you". I'd already known her since preschool but I assume he just wanted to hammer the point home that I was being watched. He winked and smiled as he passed it but only in a "Heh just kidding... but seriously no one will find you" sort of way.
  10. Hello neighbor! Basking Ridge here also.
  11. Contact them now! 2-3 month wait on membership applications lately. If you want to check the place out send me a PM and I'll guest you in sometime.
  12. Welcome to the forum, my fellow gun-toting (at least at home) neighbor! Mark from Basking Ridge here. If you're looking for a solid range, Somerset County Fish and Game Protective Association (SCFGPA) is the closest to our area, and a lovely place to shoot.
  13. We still don't know anything of her "scary experience" when she was younger. Maybe 3 pitbulls bit her hard enough to draw blood, down to the bone? If I hadn't seen a pitbull up close since one closed it's jaws around my thigh/throat/wrist, and 3 charged up on me I'd scream also. It's easy to take some bastardized version of the high-road and claim she acted incorrectly when we don't know the details. This thread's focus should be how one of our own acted effectively, swiftly, and responsibly to help another, as we would expect of them. Good work Bob.
  14. Heard it before but forgot about it, still funny!
  15. Cameron's an awesome guy, he frequently runs the SCFGPA IDPA practice nights.
  16. MrP

    anyone seen this?

Yeah but birdshot from across-the-room distance is cake. Almost feels good.
  17. I ain't going to sit here and argue with you but I want to ask you a few questions: Alright. -Do you think our society is getting better? Do I think our society is getting better? That's an incomprehensibly broad question, I'm not sure what answer you're looking for here. -Do you think in NJ you have the advantage over the criminals? Do I think I have the advantage over NJ criminals? Of course not. In any state/country the criminals have an advantage over you because by definition they're criminals. They don't have to follow laws/moral guidelines as I do. That seems obvious. Would I be at even more of a disadvantage if I carried illegally, was arrested and lost my right to own firearms right before TS actually did HTF? Probably. -Once again, Do you think our society is getting better? For the life of me I can't understand why you want me to answer the same question two times, so I won't try to. Several years back I would see clips here and there of some out of control people, but now I am actually seeing this every once in a while in MY DAILY LIFE. Not on video, not on TV, but in my travels. You see more clips of violent things on the news because it sells better. There's no news like bad news. Overall crime in the US is on a DECLINE so I would venture a guess that in your travels you walk in some rougher places than the average town. I don't understand for the life of me the attitude of people that all is well, nothing to be afraid of...stop being so worried. You know what, I am one of those people that enjoys life, goes out with my family and simply wants peace. I don't have an all is well attitude, as I thought I stated fairly succinctly in my earlier post. It's important to be aware of our surroundings, as well as important to avoid seeing something that isn't there. I also enjoy going out with my family and want them to be safe. If you care about yours don't you owe it to them not to place them in harm's way? It's nice to walk in Newark at 2:00am with your family and say "Well I should be able to walk down the street without fearing for my life", and while you would be correct it isn't realistic. But to tell people to STFU for saying "hey... wake up and be prepared...just letting you know" I am fed up with it. Complacency is running ramped! I hope we figure out who told you to STFU because that's really innapropriate behavior for the forum. There's no need to alienate people from an already small group. Since when is Freedom and the USA exempt from "falling"? Sorry for giving a "heads up"... since when is that a bad thing communicating and being prepared. You weren't communicating nor talking of being prepared, you were looking for someone else to jump on the panic bandwagon and tell you that you were right for wanting to carry illegally. As absurd and unconstitutional as NJ CCW laws are, they are still laws. Was Paul Revere a "fear mongering" moron? Suit yourself, sit back... have a beer as you watch this great nation slip away before our eyes. I think at this point in time people are either awake or will never wake up Paul Revere differed from you in the sense that a foreign army was invading his country and he was warning people of imminent danger. If you were near the brawl and the group suddenly decided to stop fighting and attack the local townsfolk, and you ran through the streets to let the local militia know what route they were taking, you would have much more in common with Mr. Revere. You weren't communicating nor talking of being prepared, you were looking for someone else to jump on the panic bandwagon and tell you that you were right for wanting to carry illegally. As absurd and unconstitutional as NJ CCW laws are, they are still laws. Oh, btw... nothing to be worried about. Incandescent light bulbs will be illegal come Jan 2012 and could include a $10,000 fine and imprisonment if sold. That would NEVER happen in the USA silly... stop spreading fear! But no worries, our freedom is not in jeopardy and things are fine. The light-bulb reference fails to fill me with an apocalyptic sense of dread. Something closer to frustration and bewilderment. I'm sorry if you found my earlier post offensive, I was frustrated with the abundance of certain types of posts that in my opinion have little value with regards to improving the NJGF community.
  18. Stumbled onto the forum when looking for info on local ranges. Signed up 20 min later, and posted to ask if any member of SCFGPA might let me tag along with them to see the facility. GlennP and Px4storm showed me the range!
  19. Best to you and yours, sounds like he was a great man.
  20. I'm really tired of threads being started mentioning a crime/riot/civil disorder with the subject line "at what point to we carry?!". Obviously you carry when you have a permit. If the situation is dire enough, you won't have to ask if you should be carrying, nor should you be outside of your barricaded basement anyway. The brawl obviously didn't turn in to some sort of mass home invasion/murder/rape/pillaging crime spree etc, so while it's important to understand what happens around us, there have been worse riots and lesser ones that didn't result in any sort of martial law, anarchy, or TEOTWAWKI. This BS isn't getting closer to anyone's area, no one is marching with spears or tec-9's in a doomsday fashion. Crime levels fluctuate, and the location of crimes being committed changes with time. /endrant
  21. I knew you were being sarcastic, I simply made the point that the sarcasm may not have been all that far from the truth.
  22. American Rifleman has a decent article on 20g slugs for hunting this month.
