CMP 1911

Recommended Posts

So my number came up for a Service Grade 1911. Managed to get it in before the CMP put their temporary halt on sales to NJ (which has since been reinstated). I'm slowly looking into the history of the gun. It's a Remington Rand frame that's a 1944 build. The slide is where it gets funky, it's a replacement slide from the 80's made by some company called Numax Electronics. Haven't been able to find much info about the company or it's history other than they made aircraft electronics. The website Coolgunsite.com has been very helpful so far with my research, but there are still some gaps. I put in a FOIA request to the US Army in Mid-June for any info about the pistol, but I still haven't received a response from them yet. I was wondering if that's normal for them to take this long? Should a send another FOIA request to them or any other branch? I was also wondering where else I can go for self service research. The CMP Forum is absolute garbage right now because after two months I still haven't had my account approved yet. Thanks in advance. Will post more pics if anyone requests it.

My FOIA request came back quickly. There's specific verbiage you must use, including how much you would be willing to pay. I found it online someplace.

Just out of curiosity what was it on the same web site you used to make the FOIA request or was it on another web site? Also how much did you end up paying for your request?

I sent the request to an email address, not via website. I did not have to pay anything, you have to offer your willingness to pay though.

I sent to this email: [email protected]

With this in the body: (my Serial # and contact info redacted)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am requesting any and all information found in the Army File of the Department Of Defense (DOD) Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry for 1911a1 Pistol serial number xxxxxxx. I am willing to pay up to $5 for this information, if required.

Thank you for your time,

Quick update for you @kc17 it's now $25 instead of $5. They actually emailed me and stated what the email should read and that was the one mistake in question. I don't think I'm going to get much out of them as their records only go back to 1975. Thanks for the help so far. I'll let you know what happens.

OK so I received an update from the Army regarding my pistol and it wasn't much. Here's what it reads:

The following Information was found in the DoD Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry for an M1911A1, Pistol Caliber .45, Automatic, NSN: 1005-00-726-5655, Serial Number: 160XXXX.
1. July 20, 2010 – The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Distribution - Anniston, Alabama received the weapon from the Crane Division Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane, Indiana.
2. March 06, 2011, December 03, 2011, January 19, 2013, March 07, 2015, May 01, 2016, March 05, 2017, June 04, 2017, March 31, 2019, April 26, 2020, and April 25, 2021 – The DLA Distribution - Anniston, Alabama conducted annual weapon serial number reconciliations on the weapon.
3. March 22, 2022 – The DLA Distribution - Anniston, Alabama shipped the weapon to the Tank Automotive and Armaments Command Civilian Marksmanship Program - Anniston, Alabama.

So at some point the US Navy had this gun. I posted a question on how to do a FOIA request to the Navy on the CMP Forum and they gave me the info to send the request. Here's the verbiage the letter should read

I request that you provide me with all information found in the Department of the Navy / Marine Corps for the following:

• Model 1911A1 pistol, .45 ACP caliber
• NSN 1005-00-726-5655
• Serial number xxxxxxx

I am willing to pay a fee of up to $50 for this information.

Please reply by email to this address or by sending a letter to my physical address below.
Here's the link to use in case anyone has to send a FOIA request to the Navy: https://foiaonline.gov/foiaonline/action/public/request

Thanks for everyone's help so far.
