Revolver Model Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I just bought my first HG ever(Glock 19) and I've got one more HG permit to use sometime in the next 2 1/2 months. Since I have regular access to a .22 for shooting on the cheap, I've decided to use the second permit towards a revolver.

After considering what I'm looking to use the revolver for as well as my current preferences and budget limitations, I'm looking for a high quality revolver that bears the following qualities:

- Chamber for .357 Magnum ammunition. I'd like the gun to be viable for home defense as well as a good range gun, so what I've read about .357 magnums sounds perfect since I could target shoot with .38s to keep the cost of regular shooting down.

- A 4" or 5" inch barrel.

- Double action. Probably a moot requirement as it seems one would have to go out of their way to end up with a single action revolver.

-Is not a Taurus. I have no personal experience with this brand, but I was advised against them by someone who's opinion I value.

-Can likely be bought new for pretty close to $500 from a retail store in NJ.

Given my checklist, could anyone recommend some models I should look into and/or consider for the purchase? The Ruger GP100 seems like a good fit, but I'd like to find a few other options and have generally been finding mostly snub noses among revolvers in the $500 range.

Best fit is the Ruger.....

for $200 more you can get the S&W 686.... still deciding between the 2 for myself....

Troy why decide, why not get both? :)

I'm pumped to get my ruger, I'm gonna have to spend an afternoon on the pistol range i think

I recommend you check out the auction sites. They give you a good idea about what new AND used firearms cost.

NIB = New in box

Perhaps the problem lies between the keyboard & chair, but I've found the gun auction sites terrible for browsing & price comparisson unless you're already keyed in on a specific model. The auction format transforms something as simple as sorting by price into a cumbersome & unenjoyable time eater because I have to flip through pages and pages of listings at $0.01 which tell me nothing about the price the guns are going for.

Sort by auction closing time instead.

It's your money but Taurus makes a fine revolver, several of them have passed though my hallowed halls and each and every one was reliable and well worth the money. That being said

S&W makes excellent revolvers probably the best there is but you are going to pay handsomely.

Within your price range you are going to very limited for a smith, even used.

S&W 686P is a fine revolver and preforms like no other.(mid 600's online)

The Taurus 608ss series and 627SS are some of my favorites.

Many formed their opinions based on others or 15 years ago when Taurus 1st tooled up.

Things have changed drastically in the last 7 years for Taurus and all for the better. It's no

different then all the posts I read about people saying current Rugers do not compare to the

Rugers of the past lot's of quality control complaints on the finish and performance.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
