They're still quite loud (CCI and Remington), I wouldn't use them for backyard plinking in a residential area.

This stuff is also very quiet...Sorta like a loud bb gun....really slow too...you can easily see the bullet travel from the gun to the target.

Many .22 rifles have 22 short listed on the barrel as well as long and long rifle. If you shoot tons of it, you can get some barrel erosion just forward of the short round. You can also just use one specific gun to shoot short out of and then it wont even be an issue. ...Or are you talking about mag cap?

Aguila makes a 22lr without gunpowder, no noise, I would not use it in the backyard.
