Hypothetical question about giving up your firearms

Recommended Posts

My thoughts and questions follow: Lets say someone owned 20 long guns & 10 handguns and one day decided they did not want to own firearms any more. They decide that instead of selling them they would turn them into a guns for money program. They do this because they don't need the money and don't want the firearms on the street anymore knowing that the Police will destroy them. They also decide to grind off the serial numbers incase any of the firearms get missed placed and find their way to the outside in the wrong hands.

Question #1: What if someone was to decide they no longer wanted to own their firearms and instead of selling them they decided to turn them into one of the guns for money programs would they get a receipt that proves they no longer own the firearms if the Government ever decided to ban firearms?

Question #2: Would grinding off the serial numbers and getting a receipt be enough to prove that you no longer owned their firearms?

Question #3: Would the receipt detail exactly the type of firearms turn in?

I know we don't have to register our firearms but there is enough paper work to prove what we own. If the Government wanted to ban firearms and demanded to see all the records from FFL dealers they would have a list if someone owned 20 long guns & 10 hand guns. I am just wondering if someone was to do this would that be enough to prove they don't own any of the firearms they had purchased. Remember this is all hypothetical.

It's hypothetical, I get that, but if you KNOW the police will destroy them, why would you grind the serials? If this were me, I would want a record of turn-in in the event that they somehow were not destroyed. Grinding the serials does not help you in the least. Rather a piece of paper signed by some gun buy back authority may save your bacon in court.

And yes Maks, I believe it is a crime to grind the numbers, however forensic technology does exist to pull up these items even when allegedly destroyed.

Most gun buybacks don't care about ground off numbers, they are more concerned about getting guns off the street - at least that's the alleged purpose.

I have seen this scenario many times over when someones hubby takes a dirt nap and the remaining family members have no clue what direction to go in and damn near panic thinking the jack booted thugs are going to rope in through the windows and arrest them all or they are going to get conned and all the guns are going straight to the Bloods and the Latin Kings. Really the best bet is finding a trustworthy FFL that will buy the lot. You wont get top dollar this way but they will get the piece of mind they are after.

I think but i could be wrong is that what redfish wants to know is... if character one is no longer able to legally own his firearms and they authorities show up at door looking for them can he say he handed them in at one of those gun buy back thingies?or do you need specific proof you got rid of them. After all they are now destroyed. ;)

If I'm wrong I still am curious. :D

Thats close, if character one can still own firearms legally but is worried that one day the Government will band guns he decides to turn in the same amount of firearms (Junk firearms) he owns to a gun buy back program to claim he no longer owns firearms. If he has proof that he turned in firearms and hides the others what could they take? Nobody wants to give up their firearms even if their band just in case the Zombies attach after the band.
