Off-duty Chicago police officer shot outside his home

By the CNN Wire Staff

July 18, 2010 2:44 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- A Chicago, Illinois, police officer was shot and killed Sunday morning after finishing his shift, police said.

Officer Michael Bailey, a a decorated 20-year veteran of the department, had returned to his home on the south side of Chicago. He was shot outside his personal vehicle about 6 a.m. (7 a.m. ET), police said.

Bailey was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m., police said

Police had no one in custody as of Sunday afternoon, but suspect more than one attacker, spokesman John Mirabelli said.

Bailey, 62, was assigned to the central business district of Chicago, Mirabelli said.

He was the third Chicago officer killed since May, police said in a statement. The most recent was July 7, when an officer was shot and killed during a struggle with a suspect in a police facility parking lot.

It's just awful. Perennial corruption, double-digit monthly body counts. While it's impossible to assure that anyone can protect themselves even if they are armed, at least they'd have a fighting chance. An ordinary unarmed citizen has no chance, and the thugs who prey on them know it and do violence with impunity.

Yesterday I was in a big box store in Rutherford and came upon a "personal protection pack". It showed a female jogger and contained a 65 lumen flashlight and a whistle or something like that. Yeah, that'll work out real well, forget about carrying a .38. A thug will just take it from you and use it against you.

Preaching to the choir, I know.

RIP OFFICER MICHAEL BAILEY.

The third Chicago police officer killed in the last two months was gunned down Sunday morning by men trying to rob him or steal his new Buick Regal, a gift the officer bought for himself in anticipation of his retirement, police said.

Officer Michael Bailey, 62, a 20-year veteran due to hang up his gun in weeks, was shot in front of his Park Manor home after an overnight shift guarding Mayor Richard Daley's house. Bailey, a married father of three, was about a month away from turning 63, the mandatory retirement age for Chicago police officers.

Bailey was in his uniform shining his prized black Buick when he was attacked about 6 a.m., a police source said. He identified himself as an officer before exchanging gunfire with at least one of the men, the source said, citing early reports.
