tony357 386 Posted July 26, 2010 evacuation of bass river state park.. BASS RIVER TOWNSHIP - The state Forest Fire Service is fighting two wildfires in the Bass River State Forest. Division Fire Warden Bert Plante said fire fighters were attempting to contain a wildfire that broke out in a swamp a couple miles north of Dan Bridge Road in the Bass River State Forest on Monday afternoon. The fire was covering a 10-acre tract, but Plante said that number would likely increase after fire crews use back burning techniques in an attempt to contain the blaze. "The problem with it being in a swamp, is we can't get to it," Plante said. "So what we have to do is try to stop it from spreading upland." A second fire was later reported about a mile east of the initial blaze, Plante said. "We have seven fire engines from the forest fire service on sight already and we've made arrangements to generate another 10," Plante said Monday afternoon. The Bass River State Forest was evacuated after the fire north of Dan Bridge Road was reported, Plante said. The state forest stretches across Ocean and Burlington counties, and is roughly six miles west of Tuckerton, and 25 miles away from Atlantic City. Visitors could be seen exiting the park shortly before 4 p.m. and a park employee said that people were being asked to leave. The smoke could be from the Garden State Parkway, several miles away from the park's entrance on Stage Road in Burlington County. The park has 176 tent and trailer camping sites and several larger group campsites, according to a state Department of Environmental Protection website. New Gretna VFD looked to be on stand by and ready to move. This was as of 8pm.
