Hard Drive Destruction

Took a box of around 20 hard drives (dated from around 1992 to last year) to MCR&PC this morning to give them a final farewell. Wanted to make the data difficult to retrieve so I can just toss the drives out.

 

Put one 308 shot through the platters of each. The other guy at the range was worried that they might leave a big mess (I told him I'd clean up any shards, etc), but there was no mess at all. Nice clean hole through the platters and PC board. This was a lot of fun!

Now use a t8 and take the magnets out. Super strong fridge magnets!

 

Looks like fun. I have bin with drives in it just like that one.

The box o' drives started around 1992. I think I hammered them before then, or maybe I just didn't have any data I gave a crap about before then.

 

I hated MFM drives. Writing software for them was tricky.

Aww heck, I still have my old Toshiba with an 8088 processor and no HD, just dual Floppy.

MFM drives stunk, RLL drives were worse as the controller support wasn't as good.
