BNJGF 0 Posted December 14, 2011 Hi. I don't have any firearms yet but I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I'm definitely going to purchase a Ruger 10/22. Not sure which handgun just yet. I have small hands so that will be a major consideration. I'm not in a hurry as I'd like to have some training first. I need to decide which company to go with for courses/training. If anyone can share their experiences with training I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I've saved the application and will apply as soon as I can.
XDJohnTact 49 Posted December 15, 2011 Welcome to the forum from Toms River. Good choice with the Ruger 10-22. I love shooting my K10-22T and Mk III Hunter.

BNJGF 0 Posted December 15, 2011 Thanks Harry. I'll be checking out all the clubs in the area after I take a course and obtain a permit. Right now I'm just soaking up all the knowledge I can gather on the forums.

Right now I'm just soaking up all the knowledge I can gather on the forums. A few things, apply for more than 1 Permit, 6 would be a good number. As far as training, we have many great schools here in NJ and have not heard a bad thing about any of them, but me personally I can only recommend the one I have dealt with and that would be Gun For Hire, they have there own section on the forum also. BNJGF 0 Posted December 15, 2011 Aren't the permits only good for 90 days?
hd2000fxdl 422 Posted December 15, 2011 Aren't the permits only good for 90 days? Yes, but most every town will extend them an additional 90 days, so that give you a total 180 days for the 6 permits. Plenty of time to use them all. You are not limited in how many you can apply for and get, but 6 is the max you can use unless you apply for an exemption. BNJGF 0 Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) I don't think I could afford to buy 6 worthwhile firearms in 6 months. How much does each purchase permit cost? Edited December 15, 2011 by BNJGF
hd2000fxdl 422 Posted December 15, 2011 6 is the max I can use over what period of time? 6 is the max you can use in 180 days going by the 1 gun a month rule (AKA: OGAM) Multi gun exemption is a different story and obtainable if you really wanted. BNJGF 0 Posted December 15, 2011 I see. I didn't know about OGAM. That sucks but won't affect me at this time. What is the cost of each purchase permit? What is the max amount of guns you purchase per year, with and without the exemption?

Alec has you covered, as many long guns, and each P2P is 2 bucks, and don't forget there is a 18 dollar money order also needed each time for a background check but the 18 bucks is only when you apply for the permits not for each one. As far as how many in a year, well if you put it on paper you can actually buy 13 hand guns in a year, but timing you purchases would need to good, and always having P2P's on hand. woodentoe 14 Posted December 15, 2011 Howdy, I'm new to the forums and currently don't own any firearms. I also live in Woodbridge. I took the Basic Pistol class with Shootnj last weekend and had a fantastic time. I'm hoping they get Range14 opened up for rifle so I can take that class too. I'm also on the lookout for people to learn from. Hey, I'll buy the ammo!

hd2000fxdl 422 Posted December 16, 2011 Thanks for all the info guys. Got another question....what do you do if you buy a used gun from a private seller? You just need to have a P2P and complete that form, it's 4 duplicate copies, 1 going the the SP, the other your PD, 1 for you and one to the seller. Private sales do not require NICS, only when you are going through a FFL.
