Replacing Media

Is there any particular sign that your media needs to be replaced? I noticed after some

time (pretty long, almost a year, 1000s of casings) that black stuff was on my casings

after being tumbled. I wasn't sure if that was worn down media or what. I poured in some

fresh media and mixed it in what was already there. Seems to bring the brass to a good

shine again.

 

Just wondering if there is a casings count, time limit, on when it should be replaced and

signs to look out for when it is worn.

When the brass has that black film on it is when I change the media.

Not really on a round count, as depending on where (indoor vs outdoor)

You shoot and what you shoot will change how fast the media gets dirty.

I was never able to really get a round count on it. Basically, I found that cleaning started taking longer and longer. Eventually, the brass started to always have a cruddy film on it. That is when I changed media. In retrospect, by that point it was too late and I was just adding gunk to the chambers of my guns by running that brass through them. Oh well.

I use stainless steel media and do a wet cleaning now.

I only change out 1/2 the media at one time. Add a dryer sheet. Maybe you have too much dope in with your media(polish).

i have used the same crushed walnut media over a year now (lizzard bedding from a pet shop) i just barely put any compound in my mix to clean my brass and i have never had a film on my brass
