Will a threaded barrel give more accuracy?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if that little extra length at the end of a threaded barrel

gives an increase in accuracy. I always wondered if it were enough to

notice. Usually it's about a half inch or more of barrel which for a handgun

is somewhat significant. Anyone experience one and could tell a difference?

I was actually thinking about this the other night.

First, while I believe that a quality barrel has more inherent accuracy than 90% of shooters, it would stand to reason that a longer barrel would have a positive effect on accuracy, albeit minimal. While the barrel itself is slightly longer, the short pistol sight radius stays the same, which I believe would be a much more limiting factor than barrel length.

On a similar and related note, I do think a threaded barrel would speed up your bullet a bit depending on load/powder because you do pick up another half inch of barrel length.

This is very true. I think your second point bout faster velocities would be more applicable.

Barrel length has little to do with accuracy. A bad barrel is bad no matter the length. In handguns mechanical accuracy has more to do with lockup of barrel into slide then with barrel length, you could have a 10" barrel and made by the accuracy gnomes but if it wiggles in the slide it is pointless as the sights are on the slide. Shooter accuracy has more to do sight radius which normally increases with barrel length giving rise to the idea that longer barrels are more accurate, but a threaded barrel doesn't do that.
