why are guns so over price!

Recommended Posts

Heck, for that price you cannot even get a decent gun here in Florida. My cousin went through the same sticker shock with his first gun. Ended up with a Ruger SR9 at $400 after first wasting $300 on a smaller gun which he finds hard to shoot. You can get a .380 LCP online for $289. Keltec makes inexpensive guns. Their P11 and PF9 are around $300 or so. As I just posted elsewhere, I think a part of the problem is that since NJ does not allow concealed carry, most guns stores stock home defense guns which tend to be larger than the many subcompacts and compact guns sold here. If the gun is for self defense you have to ask yourself what is your life worth? If the gun is for the range, $250 will not get you a gun that will handle a lot of rounds through it.

However I have seen few, and I mean very few, used revolvers for that price. You may be able to get a Kel-tec .32. If I were you I would think seriously about saving up for a better gun because I can guarantee you that you will not like any gun that you buy for $250, especially a used gun. I teach people to shoot here and am often asked to recommend guns which most ignore and end up buying by price or what looks cool them. Most regret it and either end up buying another gun or putting their first gun away never to be shot again. Some will say that any gun is better than no gun and that is true but not necessarily if that gun is a semi auto. In a defensive situation the presence of a gun greatly escalates the encounter and a gun that does not go bang when the trigger is pulled can get you killed where otherwise you may just be robbed. If you want to target shoot look for an inexpensive .22 but even those are around $300 plus tax and whatever fees you have up there.

I have easily bought more than 5 guns for less than $250 a piece. One of which was a fixed sight S&W 357 Stainless Revolver. $250 can buy you a (very) good used gun but you need to shop around.

I also have bought some good used guns for less than 250.

I dunno where you guys are finding these deals but hook a brotha up!

I've bought guns under 250 bucks, but they are all older vintage or surplus guns.

Gunauction.com has a penny auction listing. 1) You can't be in a rush. 2) You have to know the value of what you are looking at. 3) If you find something, the idea sometimes is to just "watch" the auction especially if it's been relisted a few times, often the buyer will drop the initial price after several weeks (or months) and then you can swoop in and get a good deal.

I start searches on all the gun auction sites specifying "guns in NJ" as often this will enable me to at least save on shipping, and in some cases with private parties it allows me to do a FTF without paying the government or the government IYKWIM.

Inspired by @Mrs. Peel post about firearms and spouses, I wanted to run a poll to see where we stand.

Anybody catch the VICE episode from last week on HBO? It's called "Future of Firearms"  (Season 5 Ep. 15). I thought it was a great little informative piece you can also watch on the HBO Go App if you don't have HBO. Anyways, below is a description of the episode. Check it out!

"The firearms industry experienced unprecedented growth in the last decade. Fear of government regulation drove much of that growth as President Obama repeatedly tried to pass gun control laws in the aftermath of numerous mass shootings. Now, with the political landscape fundamentally changed, the industry, and gun rights advocates, are looking for new ways to expand upon their 2nd amendment rights and the bottom line - with some surprising results. VICE takes a closer look at the future of firearms in America."

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
