It's not because they think it might help, it's propaganda and conditioning.  They are trying to teach you to feel helpless and not to consider weapons as options when it comes to self-defense.  It's been working in many states for a very long time now.

 

I have to admit that the data supporting the relationship between firearm ownership/carry and reduced crime is becoming pretty hard to refute.  But I always have believed, and probably always will believe, that it has more to do with mindset than weapons.  In jersey and NYC a man will beat the shit out of a woman on a train full of people or smash a man's head in with a hammer and nobody will do anything.  In Tuscon, Arizona, a deranged kid with a handgun tries to kill Giffords, some politicians, and everybody else in sight with a Glock and unarmed people jump and tackle him.

exactly..people have been so conditioned to ignore things and expect someone else handle everything...no one wants to get involved with anything...most men have become pussified and run and hide or pretend they dont see things like that happening....thats the problem with the country as a whole...

It's not the problem with the country as a whole. It's the problem with your country (NJ/NY/etc.), and the one you are shown on TV. 90% of the country isn't anything like that. That is what DHS is trying to fix. They will fail.
