Recommendations for 45ACP target and self-defense ammo

Looking for some advice on what to buy for target and what to buy for self-defense. Shooting with a Springfield XDM 45 3.8"

Target = whatever is the cheapest that day

 

SD = Speer Gold Dot 200gr +P

I like the federal hst and Speer gold dots.

Try those +p gold dots before relying on them for HD. If you're a new shooter they have very very stout recoil, and IMO don't give you anything over standard pressure gold dots in 45.

Target=Any 230grn FMJ ball.

HD= any JHP that feeds correctly.

With 45 acp any JHP you hit your target with will stop it. Whats more important is your grip on the firearm to keep it from a FTF situation. Just make sure you dont limp wrist it and feed that gun a good bit of ammo before you even worry about whats best

to shoot out of it. Those 3" barrels can be tricky to shoot.
