UPDATE: Rowan University student dies after being hit by car in Glassboro, officials say

GLASSBORO — A Rowan University student suffered a serious brain injury when he was hit by a car on State Street at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Officers arrived to find Matthew Uhl, 22, of Little Egg Harbor, unconscious and unresponsive on the street and the driver and vehicle still on the scene, police said.

The driver, Derrick D. Gilliam, of Bridgeport, Conn., allegedly had an odor

of alcohol on his breath and an open bottle of vodka was observed on

the floor behind the driver’s seat, said police.

Gilliam was taken to police headquarters where he allegedly refused to cooperate with the driving while intoxicated investigation, police said. He was charged

with obstruction of the administration of justice and taken to Kennedy

University Hospital in Washington Township to have a mandatory blood

sample taken,

Gilliam, 26, was then lodged in the Gloucester County Jail in Woodbury in default of $25,000 full-cash bail.

Uhl, a Rowan University student, was sent to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was listed as being in critical condition, said police.

Uhl was hit near the home of the Mu Alpha chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He is listed on the fraternity's website as the chapter's treasurer. It's believed Uhl is scheduled to graduate this year, but university officials couldn'tconfirm that Friday morning.

Several witnesses were interviewed and police are trying to identify a passenger in Gilliam’s car who left the accident scene before officers

arrived, police said.

A Rowan University student, Brian Kohler, 23, was charged with obstruction of the administration of justice for his unspecified actions at the crash scene, said police.

Since alcohol may have been involved in the crash, complaints are pending completion of the investigation and receipt of toxicology results, police said.

Anyone with information on the missing passenger is urged to contact police at 856-881-1500.

My aunt was killed by an impaired driver in Arizona. He refused to blow and the delay in getting him to hospital for the blood tox since they were trying to save my aunts life meant he was never indicted. Got away with murder.

In September he and his wife got busted for running a marijuana grow and distributing.

Real salt of the earth type. friggin scumbags.
