FLEMINGTON — A section of Main Street in downtown Flemington was closed briefly to all traffic Wednesday afternoon after post office employees found a metal object that resembles an artillery shell while cleaning out the basement, according to Sgt. William Svard.

The State Police bomb squad has been called to determine if the object is dangerous, and firefighters were dispatched to the area of the post office at the corner of Main and Capner streets.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area of the Post Office at the corner of Main and Capner streets. According to nearby business owners, old military items were discovered in the basement of the Post Office.

Main Street was closed between Bloomfield Avenue and the war monument at Pennsylvania Avenue, where Main splits into North Main and East Main streets, according to a HART traffic alert issued at 3:36 p.m.

But around 3:50, according to unconfirmed emergency radio reports, Main was open again, with Capner closed for the block between Main and Park Avenue.

Bomb squad IDs ominous object in Flemington as dummy artillery shell

FLEMINGTON — The mysterious object that caused police to close the post office and Capner Street yesterday afternoon at about 3:20, turned out to be a non-explosive "piece of practice ordnance," Sgt. William Svard said today, June 6.

That determination was made by the State Police bomb squad, which was called to the scene by borough police after they had blocked part of Capner Street and surrounded the Post Office parking lot with yellow tape.

Svard said at the time that postal personnel had found the rusty bullet-shaped object in the cellar, put it on the loading dock and called police. It was made of cast steel, was about 7-inches tall with a diameter of about 2.5 inches.

The sergeant said that the police wanted to be on the safe side in dealing with the strange object. He had theorized yesterday that It could be a training device for the military or "even a piece of plumbing equipment for all I know."

He said that post office personnel said that it could have been in the cellar for 50 years. It may have been received in the mail and never picked up.

The State Police took the troublesome piece of metal away with them.
