I gotta say however, during the ammo panic, I thought it was easier to get 7.62x39 than 5.56 as I would routinely see it sold and last longer then when 5.56 came up. 

 

I agree with Vlad on the reliability of the AR platform as mine have run like champs and think his idea of 2 uppers is the way to go.

Ammo availability during buying panic is important... But ammo availability in an end of society situation is IMO more important... Sure there are tons of AKs floating around... Tons of ammo... But in a large scale break down... 556 and ar mags will IMO be most abundant...

I have several of each.  But if a true SHTF situation arose where I had to high-tail it, I'd take an AR w. several extra parts kits.

As far as I know there are no extra parts kits for an AK. 

And, just maybe/just possibly, there is a practical reason for that

 

 

My personal choice is AK-74 for all practical uses. 

Recently obtained converted Saiga .223 - just out of curiosity, wanted to see how 223 works in AK platform. Works well. Could be great weapon for any sort of end of [insert your fear] scenario. 

 

But, as someone who actually lived through one very big and very real SHTF event  - collapse of USSR, I don't think we should expect SHTF anywhere soon. Not at the level when you actually need a firearm. 

 

If left pushes socialist agenda too far, some unfortunate events might occur, but I doubt it would look like SHTF

Murica.  I don't believe all the "AK is more reliable" malarkey.  AR15 is more adaptable and customizable to user preferences.
