Bully 749 Posted February 5, 2014 I emailed the company that's making my brake. Been delayed. Not that I'm really surprised, just a bit disappointed. C
Bully 749 Posted February 13, 2014 Scope is here. I went with a lightly used Bushnell 1-4x24 that I picked up off a forum member. It looks new and I saved some loot. Now I'm waiting on the brake... still. C

Bully 749 Posted February 13, 2014 which brake did you get? and you much be frustrated at this point. i would be. hell i'm frustrated i can't find the barrel i want for my build. I have one coming from Accuracy Inc. They have a run being made, but it got backed up. Sucks but what to do? It'll get here sooner or later. I'm sure you will make much better use of it then I did, my one trip to the range with it I wouldn't even call it used! Good Luck! Thank you again. I'm thrilled and am hoping to use the heck out of it. C

Bully 749 Posted February 21, 2014 So Carl, from Accuracy International, actually called me yesterday. He thanked me for my patience and said that the brake will be shipping tomorrow(today)!!! It's gonna go priority mail so it should be here Monday/Tuesday. I feel like a kid anticipating Christmas!!! I will post pics of the brake as soon as I have it in my grubby little hands and I will be getting the rifle from the 'smith ASAP. C
Boejoula 0 Posted February 22, 2014 Reading through this and seeing your progress, I give you a ton of credit! 4 months going. Looks like an awesome build. I do not have the patience though.I was gonna dive into the AR platform and just buy one. Did some reading and decided to build one. Since I only shot one before doing this build I had no idea what I wanted. So I asked one member for some advice and help. Ordered all my parts after a day and am just waiting for the complete upper to come in. Wanted to post in here to say nice build, follow the thread, and get some good information on upgrades I will be sure to do.

Other than the skeleton stock, the entire rifle is different that what I had imagined it was going to be. Seeing the evolution is kinda neat. Thanks for the kind words. I have very little patience, however being married with kids and the lack of play money sorta makes it look like patience. Patience and poverty seem to complement each other pretty well. One can certainly beget the other. I should have pics of the completed rifle up here in the next few days. I'm looking forward to adding to the build picture thread, that's for sure. Thanks again. pbkid6974 1 Posted February 22, 2014 It took me over 8 months to finish my first build. Partly because of money and partly because stuff was never in stock. But I too am eager to see the final product...

Boejoula 0 Posted February 23, 2014 I had been planning a 1911 eleven purchase for some time. Never knew what i really wanted. I have shot a kimber desert warrior and loved it so i was looking at that or the warrior soc. I took a trip to the range with my fiance and she is very afraid of shooting anything bigger than her m&p22 but i was trying to get her to shoot my 9mm. As soon as the guy in the lane next to me shot his scar 308 she was ready to go home lol. As i leaned over to see what he had, he and a friend asked if we wanted to shoot their 308 or sig ar. Of course i said yes and shot them both. The three of us and the range officer had convinced my fiance to shoot the AR as well... From that moment on i knew i would save money on a kimber by building an AR. i should have the rest of the parts in next week. I went with a complete spikes upper w/ dynacomp brake, 1:7 twist
Bully 749 Posted February 23, 2014 I'm looking forward to seeing your build. Should be cool. And yes, the AR is my wife's favorite gun to shoot, albeit in .22lr. I'd like to get her into something a bit more powerful but time will tell. C
pbkid6974 1 Posted February 24, 2014 she will probably like the .300 blk. i've heard its recoils almost exactly like a 5.56.

JTS1469 0 Posted February 27, 2014 Any advice on a 556 barrel and some of the other parts needed. Looking to shoot from 100 out to 300. I have a BCM upper and would like to start collecting some parts and reading this thread is pushing me forward. Plan on using an m223 scope or something similar. Not on a strict budget but don't want to go crazy either. I have an M&P 15 already and could start changing things on that but I would rather build another one and keep that one close to stock. Any advice would be great. Thanks, John

pbkid6974 1 Posted February 27, 2014 For that distance I would suggest 1:7 barrel. Works better with heavier bullets. Twist rate has nothing to do with distance you will be shooting. If he plans on shooting 55 grain ammo then 1:9 is best. 62+ grain ammo 1:7 is better. A mixed bag than 1:8. Mil-spec is 1:7 twist. Just buy from a reputible source and youll be fine. And don't be too cheap. We all want a good deal but the barrel is the heart and soul of the rifle. It's really up to you and how light you want the gun to be. MidwestPX 172 Posted February 27, 2014 I am very new to the AR platform so forgive me if I'm wrong. Don't you want heavier bullets if your goal is distance? Technically, you want longer bullets which tend to be heavier. Personally, I don't understand why eight twist isn't more popular given that it properly stabilizes everything that can be loaded to mag length in an AR15. If your goal is distance, either seven or eight would work with eight giving you a little more versatility on the light bullet side of things.
WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 358 Posted February 27, 2014 Isn't barrel length a factor as well? If you're using a 14.5" barrel, wouldn't it make sense to go with 1:7 so the bullet makes two full rotations? I'm not an expert so just asking.
