Fred2 367 Posted March 7, 2017 In the middle of the day, I saw the this dark thing run across the road, and then swim through a little stream in Morris Township NJ. This was a heavily wooded are by Patriots path. It was a little bigger than a squirrel, thin tail, dark fur, and able to swim. Not how to describe the gait, but it was kind of hopping. T Bill 649 Posted March 7, 2017 Sounds like a muskrat. https://www.maxwaugh.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/muskrat052410ys14.jpg
Fred2 367 Posted March 7, 2017 That's not it. The body is too fat, and the tail is too skinny. The thing I saw had a furry tail, but not as furry as a squirrel.

RichP 115 Posted March 7, 2017 Probably a mink if your description of size is accurate. Larger would be an otter. Both can be found in NJ.
fishnut 2,358 Posted March 7, 2017 There is an otter in the area too. I saw it at the high bridge falls dam in lake solitude around valentines day. Went into an old beaver hut and came out with a decent size trout.

Fred2 367 Posted March 8, 2017 The long tail weasel and the mink seem to be in the running. The little guy zipped across the road, then same across the small creek, so I only saw it for a second or two. It was a pretty neat sighting. The first time I saw that kind of animal in the wild. If I was in the center of town, maybe a weasel.

Fred2 367 Posted March 8, 2017 I was able to medicate some bait, and cured him.
fishnut 2,358 Posted March 8, 2017 Nice, I was going to recommend that if you were willing. It's so easy to do if you can keep them coming to the bait.
mipafox 438 Posted March 8, 2017 Space herpes. Could also be muskrat. I've seen them up that way. For some reason I always see them in the crappiest areas that border wetlands. Or maybe I just spend too much time in the crappiest areas that border wetlands. My money is on space herpes.
